The main problem with describing light is people using the words ‘light’ and ‘sunlight’ interchangeably. I’m not even going to start with defining one or the other, instead let me say this: the reason for the casual usage of words describing light is because humans have no innate requirement to be specific about light. Think about the analogous subject: light is to plants as food is to animals. Now think about all the ways our language is specific about food and how we hear these terms regularly: calories, nutritional value, sustainability.

If plants wrote a book on how to take care of them indoors, it would be highly detailed and specific about light, so that we, human caretakers, would have a thorough understanding on the subject. When humans write about plant care, I gather that “getting watering right” is the only thing that matters and light is somehow adequately described by some vague words, which are presumably applicable to any interior space. We have it backwards…
