While I was away for 10 days, I had my mom come over once to water the plants, but at the current light level, some of the ferns would have dried up before she would be there to water. Most “vacation plant care” strategies focus on the question “how will the plants get water while I’m away?” But if you take a holistic approach, you can manipulate other factors, like my fav (and your plant’s fav), light. Specifically, any duration of direct sun is what causes the most rapid water usage by both evaporation and root uptake. So because the afternoon sun normally shines directly onto my plants, I needed to block/diffuse it so that my plants wouldn’t deplete the soil moisture so quickly. I achieved this by using my photography diffusion panels (the two white circles against the window). Yes, this slows the growth a bit but I needed the plants to survive. Now that we’re back, I’ve moved all plants back to their original places. Wife is happy about that!
