I couldnt believe it, a planter box created from only 3 fence pickets? Costing only $3 each, these planter boxes have a low production cost of around $10! You can see all over facebook marketplace where people are selling them for $60-$80, but I found mine to sell the best when priced at $30. And many people bought this size box as an add-on. A lot of people either wanted custom boxes. Which, I qouted a selling cost of $10 per $3 fence picket I used.
We have planted many different varieties in these boxes and they are doing great. I do not use a liner; cedar is naturally weather sealed and will not rot, warp, decay or mold. I also did not seal the boxes with any sort of clear coat or paint. Overtime, cedar will turn from its pretty redish brown to grey when exposed to sunlight for a prolonged period of time.
These are a great foot-in-the-door project for anybody who is looking to begin selling their woodworking projects, or simply taking their woodworking hobby to the next level. Before these planter boxes, I only made furniture and built things for myself, and family (where I only charged them for the materials). These boxes not only helped me to make my first dollar by woodworking, but when posting this video, I have made $1208 profit; and yes, thats factoring in my total materials cost, from buyers in a small town of 3000 people.
Two tips not mentioned in the video:
1) do not take large orders or custom orders without obtaining a deposit. Luckily I had only one person order a taller 25x16x16 box and stop responding to me, his name is Ron Whitaker… Unfortunately I did not take deposits or payment in advance, but these are also not expensive to build.
2) you can use treated boards, cedar is less than a dollar more and better for the plants, unless you use a liner and are going to paint the exterior.

Thank you so much for this. I love them.
I guessed 82. Not bad!
Can I make you a pdf of those plans in sketch up for you to use?
Gonna try this tomorrow. Can it be done with a mitre saw alone? I don’t have a table saw. Should be doable right? So just fill with soil/rocks and plant whatever?
Great idea. Thanks for the tips and the video. Keep up the great work. 👍👍👍👍👍
Absolutely Great Work Aaron, looking forward to seeing you build more stuff. If you have any questions about any working contact me I been doing it 35 years 👍
I'm gonna build one of these. Great video, man. Keep up the great work.
Brad nails will be strong enough to hold all that wet soil ?
Great job, you my friend is going viral! Keep up the good work!
Nice work!
Awesome video man. Love the tips along the way. Definitely making these with my teenage son. Hopefully it becomes a nice side gig for him, if anything itll be a good bonding project.
Love it, but I can't find the plans
nice work
This is cool. What do you think the weight capacity is?
Love this!! Thank you SO much for detailed sharing. I came from TikTok as well.
Very nice. Thank you for the shop tour and the information. You made it look so easy!
Very cool will hopefully be making these this weekend. Do u have plans for the smaller one? My bf loves gardening, I do not, so I figured I could help by giving him these boxes
use your push stick or you will get hurt….smh
Excellent build, and description.. thanks for the square up trick.
I am going to make this. I happen to have three pickets laying around. Unfortunately they are not quite 5 1/2 inches wide. I will make it work. If you are interested I drew up your plans in sketchup. I can send you the file or a jpg of the layout. Not an experienced sketchup artist by no means. You are welcome to use or not.- Phil
I see a good plan illustration on you thumbnail. I would not bother with mine.- Phil
This is incredible! Please put more out there like this! You have a knack for presenting. You got yourself a subscriber
Love this… found you on TikTok. Subscribed here for the free plans. Nice video, thanks for the plans. Looking forward to future content
69 nails
Nice job buddy!! Great box and plans. To add one more tip to your list and probably the most important… Let your cedar (or treated) boards dry a couple weeks before making these. You can guess how I know…
Very cool project!
Here from Tictok. This is awesome dude. I also subscribed!
Great vid . Very comprehensive. New subscriber.
Liked and subscribed.
fantastic, build. easy to follow for a retired rookie. I have been filling in my exposed nail holes with a mix of the picket saw dust and glue. just work it in the hold let it dry and sand and you will never notice. also like the comments about strengthening up the legs to give more support to the legs and the bottom.. thanks and great video
@WhosTheVoss Do you have plans for the longer and the taller planters as well? It would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much for this planter video and free plans. I was confused about how to make them but you made it so much clearly and easily. Subscribed. You Rock!
Nice Job, I think I will bang out a few of these. Also, ended up here due to tiktok. one suggestion is to limit your dead air time (maybe a little music?)
Do you pay attention to moisture levels of the pickets before assembling?
One more question. What are the measurements of the short sides on the mitered rims in the diagram? I know the long sides are 15 5/8” but my ocd mind tried to do soh cah toa and I learned I didn’t learn anything in geometry/trig. Or is it just as simple to use the first as a guide and just do alternating 45° angles?
Cedar picket last year 1.81 per board today 3.81 up two dollars in less than a year
If I don't have a nail gun what kind of nails should I use?
THANK YOU! Knowledge is key and thank you for sharing for free. LIKED, SUBSCRIBED, COMMENTED.
Great video! I just finished making 4 boxes and they came out pretty good. I was wondering if you could include the plans for the bigger size that you got from the Whitaker custom order. I would like to try that one next. Thanks in advance!
7 min in and Im sayin 68/69 nails
45 nails
What size nails?
Thank you for the video and I really like your presentation style. Clear, concise and without all the unnecessary fluff. Thanks also for the free plans. I don't have cedar fence pickets in my area (South Florida). So, I'll have to make mine with pressure treated fence pickets or pallet wood. Keep the how-to videos coming.
Making different varieties to supplement my income. Seriously, Thank you for the idea Bro!
