I’m so proud of my maidenhair fern: she’s reached fern puberty! (meaning, the most recent fronds have spores.) I would also like to point out that the average indoor humidity this winter has been around 30%. Ask me if I’ve ever misted this plant or used a humidifier – never! If your entire fern became dry and crispy, it’s not strictly because of low humidity, it is because the soil remained dry for more than a few days, which causes the fronds to die back – a survival mechanism where the roots decide to abandon the fronds as they wait for more favorable soil conditions (i.e. consistent, even moisture). For me, this plant sits right up against the West facing window, getting 2-3 hours of direct sun every day. I lift the pot every few days to see how heavy with water the soil is – the moment I feel it even slightly lighter, I water it thoroughly, allowing the excess to drain away.
