My younger Rabbit’s foot fern (Davallia fejeensis). 2️⃣ Look how a broken rhizome continues to grow by producing a new growing tip from the side. 3️⃣ Drainage holes? Nope. The more you understand about plants, the more such rules become suggestions.

Any planting medium holds a certain amount of water. With drainage holes, if you pour more water into the medium, the excess will drain away. Without drainage holes, excess water would be trapped. Thus, I’m careful to not pour in more than the maximum amount. But of course, I must bring in light – without adequate light, it doesn’t matter what amount of water you pour in, the medium will remain moist and go stale. A light starved plant will have weak roots and, in the presence of a moist, stale, and low oxygen environment, root rot will likely set in. Calling this “overwatering” will make you miss the point of how plants work. Light is the prerequisite for plant care – the foundation of plant life. Watering, fertilizer, etc. are necessary only when the plant has the light it wants.
