There’s something special blooming at @longwoodgardens right now:
.
“We have a special orchid on display in our Orchid House! Rarely seen in the United States, Ophrys scolopax is a species of orchid found across Southern Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. This is the first year that the orchid has flowered for us and we are very excited to share its magnificence with our guests.
Ophrys are commonly known as bee orchids, and many mimic insects or bees in their appearance. In the case of Ophrys scolopax, the flowers mimic the appearance and scent of female bees. Male bees mistake the flower to be a female and attempt to mate with it. In doing so, they accidentally pollinate the flower. Look closely when searching for this orchid—it’s barely the size of a quarter and can easily be missed!”
