Installing a Honeysuckle Espalier with Robbie from @visitourgarden! :: Small Space Gardening

Welcome Gardeners! Today Robbie (@visitourgarden ) and I had the best time hanging out and installing a beautiful espalier on his fence! The change an espalier can make in a small space is so incredible and worth the work of installing (especially when there is a yummy lunch afterward!) 😉 Enjoy!

  1. Had so much fun!! Thanks for making the drive up and and I can’t wait to come down to your place for the next project 🤫💚

  2. What a fun video! So much silliness! I am sorry I missed lunch with you two though – hoping you show the dining area on the tour tomorrow. Thank you!!!!

  3. OMG, y'all had me laughing about your "fighting" over who is the brains of the operation — LOL.

  4. The espalier will look awesome on the black fence as it grows. You two are a blast and rarely miss either of your posts. Hugs from Elk Grove, CA.

  5. That’s gorgeous. I’m so glad you shared how you make them, because if I had tried this in my own I would definitely had tried to make the wires too tight.

  6. Could you do an espalier with rose thunbergia? I ordered two from Annie’s annuals and I was trying to decide if I should put a large grid up my brick wall for it to climb, or if I could do what you did with this project. I just don’t know if it will be too vigorous.

  7. Thanks for asking what kind of rose that is at the beginning because my mouth dropped when I saw it— GORGEOUS OMG!!!

  8. ❤ you too are wonderful together! I had a good laugh this morning, watching and Robbie. I’m fairly new to your channel but love every single show that I’ve seen when I first saw you and Robbie I thought you were brother and sister! both of your places are beautiful! I get up each morning, get my cuppa coffee and sit down and hope you have posted a new video lol! I recently started turning my backyard into a flower garden, something I’ve always wanted to do. It is so addicting! I’m becoming a familiar face at all the nurseries within 100 mile radius lol.

  9. That was such fun to watch! You two are a hoot together, great to have a friend to garden and laugh with!🇨🇦

  10. Looks like you and Robbie had a blast. He is fortunate you went up to ‘supervise’ came out great 😊

  11. After finding out the last garden channel I was supporting run a homophobic church, this was a breath of fresh air! Immediately subbed, thank you so much. Love the tours as well, so inspiring. 😍

  12. You two are so funny to watch! I love Robby's orange gands!! So relatable! Am i the only one who thinks you look like brother and sister? I made a wire trellis in my backyard after seeing yours on the garden tour. I love it!! And I planted honeysuckle 😉

  13. Born in NY, grew up in Florida, lived in NC now for 21 years, and that soil reminds me of Florida soil. I’m so jealous!!! I make many amended raised beds because our clay is so impossible. Looks gorgeous guys!

  14. Q&A: I want to add an espalier in my 9b garden-6 hours of afternoon sun. I can’t decide between star jasmine and honeysuckle. Can you give pros and cons to each?
I can’t wait to see Robbie’s when it’s fully grown!! Thanks for a great tutorial!

  15. You are guys are hilarious together! Question: I would love to create an espalier on the back of our house, but I worry about growing plants there since it's wood and we just had a lot of dry rot repaired. I know the plants are supposed to grow on the wire, and in a previous video, I saw that you regularly run your hands behind the vines to make sure nothing is attaching itself to your house. Is that enough, do you think? Or, for a house prone to dry rot, am I asking for trouble if I install an espalier? Am I better off risking a fence instead of the side of our house?

  16. I stumbled on to your channel and love it! I live in Vacaville with the same hot zone! I was wondering when you stain the fences that you’ve showcased in several videos do you have to worry about it bleeding through on the neighbor’s side of the fence? I was considering the stain, but was afraid it might make my neighbors mad if there was charcoal stain bleeding through.

  17. Love you guys!!! So much inspiration, reminding me to try to label the plants cause you definitely forget

  18. omgggg what a difference in the garden that espalier makes!! I’m team espalier for life! lol Now to find a wall in my garden perfect for one!

  19. Great job guys! What a fun day! You two are very entertaining to watch together! Excited to see how this grows and fills in. Thanks for sharing your day with Robbie! Bonnie 🇨🇦

  20. Such a fun project!!!!! Loved watching the install!! I am getting ready to add espalier in my front yard (inspired by Janey’s ivy espalier!!!). I do have one question for you, Janey: could you show how you prune your ivy espalier to keep the design tight?

  21. are the big eye screws really necessary? is the weight of the vine distributed throughout the structure? i am not great with math! i already have my screws and wonder if i should buy more.

  22. So glad you videod this. Robbie, did the large eye hooks go through to the neighbors side, also when you stain the fence does it drip through to the other side? I have neighbors on most sides so I just want to be sure I’m prepared. My husband thinks the espalier might ruin the fence, does the ivy or honeysuckle get onto the fence? Great fun. Thanks.
