We love to hear stories about your gardens! Susan E. shares:

I live in Chelsea, Michigan (about 12 miles west of Ann Arbor). When I bought my house 12 years ago, only lawn surrounded the house – a blank canvas! I am a master gardener, and my dream was to have beautiful gardens to enjoy with little or no lawn to maintain. So every year, I replaced more grassy areas with mixed borders containing shrubs, small trees and perennials. Last summer I removed the last bit of grass from the paths that meander around the house and filled them with pea gravel. I have flowers every season, birds and butterflies. I get compliments from neighbors and total strangers as they drive by.

Here are some photos (taken this past June)

1. My house is on a corner. Japanese maples in the front, serviceberry and crabapple down the side. Hedge composed of dwarf Alberta spruce and boxwoods.

2. This is a section of one of the paths that runs down the west side of the house. Ligularia ‘Britt Marie Crawford’, clematis and hosta are off to the right. Crabapple ‘Centurion’ and arborvitae ‘Emerald Green’.
.
3. Another section of the west side: Lady Ferns, hostas, heuchera and cardinal flower.
