String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii)

Step 1 isn’t watering, it’s light: put the plant where it has as wide a view of the sky as possible – the open sky is the source of “bright indirect light”. When the sun comes into direct line of sight with the plant, then you must consider whether that plant can tolerate it and for how many hours: string of hearts can tolerate 1-3, perhaps more for a mature plant.

If you don’t provide the above lighting conditions, the plant will starve and watering will not do anything except create a stale, moist environment where root rot can set in – this is commonly (and unhelpfully) referred to as “overwatering”. I’d prefer to think of it as “not enough light to make the plant work” but alas, it would be too long to explain.

Step 2: given the above lighting conditions, you can employ the “water when fully dry” strategy – bring the soil to maximum saturation once it is completely dry.
