Appreciating how a plant grows: 1️⃣ my staghorn fern has lived on this wall under the skylight for almost 4 years. Every few weeks, it will shed a frond or two.
–
2️⃣ They’ll turn completely brown and just fall off. Because the plant has adequate exposure to the sky and is sufficiently blocked from direct sun (see the white sheer curtain), I can maintain a good watering strategy: whenever the sphagnum moss is mostly dry. I take down the entire mount, run it under the shower for a minute to fully soak the moss, wait a few hours for it to stop dripping, then put it back on the wall.
–
3️⃣ I’m confident about these conditions because there’s always new fronds emerging.
–
4️⃣ As for the shield frond, their way of growth is to cover the previous one as it turns brown. Look at the layers of shields past.
–
In summary, if you understand your conditions and your care is in line with those conditions, then leaf turnover can be accepted as part of plant parenthood.
