Roots and Refuge Farm: A lush homestead morning (and a video making fail) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Do you get roly-poly’s in your garden? I’ve had them the last couple of years and they absolutely decimate new seedlings popping up. I have to start everything in cups and transplant after they’ve gotten their first true leaves. One thing I’ve done recently that helps protect the seedlings is cut the bottom out of a solo cup and plant that directly in the garden. I think the slick sides prevent them from crawling up and getting to the plant.

  2. Hey Jess, well the rain chased me in from planting to watch this video! I don’t mind drizzle but when cold raindrops run down your back, for me it is time to come in! We needed this rain so definitely not complaining! It does my heart good to see how fast things grow after a good rain and some sunshine afterwards! The weeds also slide out like butter! I still have 75% of what I will be planting left to do but as we just had a frost a few days ago I can wait! Just love all the possibilities of what will be up in my next stroll through the garden! Blessings on this rainy day filled with promise! ❤️😊🌺🍓💚🌸🤗

  3. And two more words for you (clearly I am in teacher mode this evening)
Petricor (PEH-tree-kor) the smell of dust after rain. And spirophyll (SPIH-roh-fill) breath of trees (that green leaf/rain smell)

  4. We used to build birdhouse for crafts fairs. Did you know not to clean out a bluebird nest. The same family will come back next year. You will enjoy seeing them.

  5. I have to say Jess, nothing about the garden but you! You look absolutely beautiful. Your hair being darker just frames your face so beautifully. Just spoken from a great gramma heart. And I do enjoy all your shares from your garden and from your heart. Thank you

  6. I’ve had major problems with grasshoppers eating my plants soon after they emerge. Cucumbers, okra and especially beans.

  7. Put one of the wire flags you used for your contour marking by the Killdeer nest so nobody steps on it.

  8. Interesting …
I had to reseed more this year than usual..
    Just a thought …
Excess spring rain may have caused ground to stay to wet and cold with a result that the seeds either rotted or to cold to germinate.

  9. I LOVE horse weed for chop and drop. I don’t pull it, I just trim it and throw it around as mulch. 😅

  10. Send some of that rain up to western Canada. There are forest fires everywhere and we need, desperately, some rain, and lots of it. I’d rather have rain for days than these fires! Oh, your gardens look lovely.

  11. my potato plants were attacked by aphids last night. i blasted those bad boys off this am hoping they didn't do too much damage!

  12. Everything is so beautiful. My garden is going ok. We supposedly have a ton of grasshoppers due to the rain we got. I have only seen a couple. How you you keep them from your garden? Do not know what to use. Have had a few squash bugs but have been pulling them off and stomping on them. What is something safe to put on them? Obviously I don’t know much about preventing plant problems but will try anything. My mind just squeezes open when I view your posts. Love how you know all your cats names. Love all your posts. Wish I knew what was growing in my garden that I didn’t plant. I usually just pull them out as thinking they are weeds. Love how you know what has come up in your gardens.

  13. I love cooking radishes. Baked in oven or in soups stews etc. the texture becomes similar to rutabagas and they lose any heat. They are my favourite potato alternative.

  14. I am so jealous. I live in Alaska and our season is so short and we had a late “spring” with cold weather and big wind.

  15. I’m in Connecticut and it’s Saturday, 5/20, and it’s been raining here all day, I went out very early this morning, got up at 5:30, went out and planted a bunch of flower seeds and also planted more peas for the 3rd time, having a heck of a time this year with my peas
