Here’s a #plantfailfriday #timelapse – upon finding new buds on this Adenium obesum (Desert Rose), I asked @houseplantgal if I could take it to my studio to time lapse. She agreed, assuming I would know how to care for it. Here’s where my lack of experience with flowering caudiciform plants was exposed: I thought, since I would be leaving the plant alone for 2 weeks, I should probably give it a good soaking to start off the time lapse. After one week, I knew something was up because the bud seemed to have been stalled in its development. Yesterday, I found nothing but a blackened carcass of a bud after 15 days. What happened?

My guess is, in the wild, the Adenium obesum’s pollinators must be active during the dry season. So when the equivalent of a downpour occurred, the plant must have decided it was not worth its energy to continue with this set of flowers and aborted its current buds. Thankfully, you can see the next set of buds rising up just at the end of the time lapse.

I decided to abort the time lapse and give the plant back to @houseplantgal so she could enjoy the remaining flowers. She wasn’t too mad about it…lesson learned 😅🌿
