Roots and Refuge Farm: Let’s Talk Cross Pollination and Toxic Squash (and the Plant Guessing Game) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I'm using homemade compost this year and it apparently hadn't cooked enough to kill off the seeds……I have baby tomato seedlings EVERYWHEREEEEEEE

  2. The ancestors of cucumbers were very poisonous. It takes 3 different gene mutations for them to be domesticated and made edible. So if any one gene mutates back to the original condition, it would make cucumbers poisonous again.

  3. Thank you for that extra encouragement with squashes. I have over, well over 100 volunteer squashes growing from a dump of spaghetti and tromboncino and butternut that got frozen thawed and neglected over winter. I dont know which is which but the bed I dumped them in is busting. So I'll keep them and hope for the best! (100 might be a wee bit too many)

  4. Here I am struggling to grow enough basil and it's taking over your walkway hahaha… I'm determined though!! Planted probably close to forty or fifty plants hoping to get a decent harvest haha! Well done young sir naming the plants! Happy Mothers day Jess!

  5. I still find my 15yo out playing in the water in the garden. I’m not sure he’ll ever change.

  6. I received my tee shirt order yesterday, and I happen to be wearing the same print and color! They are very soft and cooling 👍🏼😊

  7. Several years ago I purchased a cantaloupe from a farm stand. Once we left the farm the entire vehicle smelt horrible. I eventually realized it was the melon. It was not overripe and I could not understand how a beautiful melon smelled bad and was worse when I cut it. It tasted terrible. I threw it away and have always wondered what was wrong with the melon. I think you gave me the answer on your video today.

  8. I love watching when Ben and you do a garden tour. Can you tell me what are the names of the strawberries you are growing in your Green Stalks?

  9. One time my dad threw a squash from his garden out in his yard. The seeds provided a volunteer. He watched it all summer. Then the moment came to try it. It was so bad. We called it a skunkin. Bad squash but good memory.

  10. I’m pretty sure Ben needs his own channel now! ❤ also happy Mother’s Day Jess, you don’t know this and I am positive I’m not the only one, but I confided you my momma gardener it’s because of you I started a garden ❤
