Canning Supply Update – May 2023

#herhomesteadskills
I decided to check out the current stock situation for canning supplies. There have been shortages in the past and it’s never too early to make sure you have an adequate supply for the upcoming canning season.

  1. I'm down at the other end of the lake from you, Toni, on the NY side across from Kingston, so I get your rain a couple of hours later. Stop sending it! LOL! I haven't gotten anything in the garden yet, onions and potatoes are sitting here in boxes ready to bead out to the garden. Hurry up and wait, I guess.

  2. Hi Toni – that was a nice trip through the stores. I am fortunate that the Canadian tire near us has a good stock of jars and lids, i will be getting mine soon – I never take a chance of waiting until harvest time. I usually get 10 cases of each size of jar that I use, plus the lids. I do have some in stock, but am out of jam and hot sauce size jars. That was a fairly decent price on the tomato processing machine. Mine was made in Italy and has the electric motor so a little more expensive. I’m still up-potting plants have about 100 peppers, 48 celery plants left to go. Next week I can plant my onion starts and potatoes in ground – then it will be a waiting game until last week of May to get cabbages, Swiss chard, spinach, carrots, beets, green and yellow beans and cucumbers in. Can’t plant tomatoes and squash until first week of June – those plants will be quite large by then. Lots of fun playing in the dirt

  3. Hello Toni. I bought the same tomato press you showed, and was not happy to find it was made in China. Same with the Forjars lids. They are importing until they can build a warehouse here in the USA. I planted more asparagus plants today and 3 horseradish roots, all in pots and grow boxes. Hopefully one more week until planting! Have a blessed evening

  4. I too am able to get the lids from Dollarama in Hamilton, Ontario, I have been stocking up all winter, lol… I have switched from Bernardin Jars to Golden Harvest from Walmart, Every time I do a Grocery order for pick up I add 4 cases of Pint jars to my order, it is the size i use most for my Family of Two. I haven't had a problem yet. I seed save my Marigolds every year to plant between my Tomatoes to deter the bugs, it's worked so far

  5. I will definitely purchase more Canning Jars since a good bit of mine are furnished to my Children & RARELY make it back.😉

  6. I extended my vegetables garden this year 4 f × 32f on both side of my fence,, plus lots of Containers ,, I planted last year lots of herbs and Medicinal. Flowers and I ordered more raspberry, blueberries Shrub. ,, been caning and caning as much I can ,, prices are extremely high ,, I really feel bad for people can't stock up because of low income, but we are family of 5 , I have extra to give to people in need , I have been selling items that u don't need and am using the money to buy things I need ,, all my vegetables are ready to be planted just waiting until mothers day ,, it's been raining alot in Bradford Ontario..

  7. Toni, I noticed on the photos of the canning jars, that they are only good for 18 months, as far as sealing is concerned. I didn’t know that. I see people on YouTube with many jars that they say they have had put up for years! Perhaps you or your subscribers could clarify? Thanks.

  8. That was fun going shopping with you Toni. Our Walmart here in Massachusetts so far has been great on the amount of canning jars and lids. I started last month purchasing and did another one today. As I agree with you in the fall I think they will be very difficult to come by.

  9. I have gotten lots of jars from our Value village. 6 quarts for 4.99 which is ok. I check for chips etc and they have been great : )

  10. I just started looking at stores going to MICHIGAN. They do have jars $3 dollars in some dizes cheaper. Thanks 👍❤🙏🌹 Happt Mothers day. 🌹🌹🌹

  11. I couldn't quite tell which are the wide mouth and which aren't, but it is looking like your lids are far cheaper at your CT than at mine. I go to one in South Eastern Ontario. The wide mouth lids are $6+ and have been for a while. I wonder why the difference in pricing between the 2 stores, and how that works for online.

  12. I agree Toni anyone looking for canning supplies needs to buy up now and over buy because the prices won’t go down , only up in price! Aldi you never know when you’ll need extra jars for unexpected surprise veggies ti can !! God bless ❤️🙏🙋🏻

  13. Walmart had regular lids for $3.95 and $4.95 for wide lids. Ace Hardware same price. Two years ago my daughter gave me for my July birthday a hundred dollars worth of both size lids, so I won’t need any until they are way down, but if I see any good deans I’ll pick some up. I think by fall they will all jump up .50% or more. Thank you Toni for your update.

  14. Looks like the trip put a smile on your face after all the rain😁My go to store is a old fashion hardware store in town or the feed store. We just got a dollar store haven’t made it there yet. Use to do thrift stores but there’s nothing local.!Happy planting !!

  15. i have started stocking up on seals; don't want to run into same issue as last year. I don't have dollarama close by but plan a trip to North Bay or Timmins soon to stock up at lower prices

  16. I miss the full cover boxes the jars use to come in. They were great for double stacking full jars and dust cover for jars.
