This SMALL Change Made a BIG Difference – Gardening in Portugal #nodig

It’s the end of April and things have been growing well in our no dig garden in Portugal – but there’s always room for improvement. We love the no-dig way of gardening but struggle to keep a separation between the compost in the beds and the bark in the pathways. In this video we’re aiming to remedy that.

Join us for a few days in the garden as we build some wooden frames around the beds and top up the paths with bark.

  1. Whatva beautiful job you did your garden looks great
I noticed your swiss chard WOW 😲 it looks so beautiful 😍

  2. Potatoes are not ready to Harvey until the plants above the soil are all dying.

  3. HELLO KYLIE & GUY, KITTY & ASSORTED FEATHERED FOWL…LOVE IT, LOOKS SO NEAT & TIDY; ORDER IS A GOOD THING!…I WILL BE LOOKING AROUND HERE IN THE VANCOUVER REGION FOR THAT SMALLER BARK VERSION…THANKYOU FOR SHARING YOUR WORK WITH US…ALL THE BEST…🙏;)

  4. We used to spread straw and let our chickens work it. They ate all of the remaining seeds and added a nice coating of poo. We would collect it after 6 months or so and spread it as mulch. Since we only had 8 chickens, there wasn't that much poo, so the straw-poo combo wasn't too hot. It was wonderfully effective as a moisture/sun shield for the soil.

  5. edging makes it so much tidier – love it! happy spring for you guys, autumn in Australia but still lots of gardening all year for us 🙂

Hi, nice videos , following your videos since a year now , its interesting cause i made nearly the same process with the garden, but i using hay, cause we have a lot by mow the terrain, but that smaller woodchips looks good, could you tell me where do you get that smaller woodchips, could you give me an adress, living near fundao perhaps not so far away to get it too. thanks and keep it up so professional

  7. Looking good. Ease of gardening access is great. Except for the extreme heat, it would be a pleasure to be out there. Best wishes.

  8. I was watching your video ,I like to treat wood with Pva glue first coat 75%water 25% glue second coat 50:50 that will give the wood a plastic coat and cheap.

  9. Make some orange juice pasteurised concentrate frozen like old days.

  10. Great info, the beds are looking wonderful. I liked the little tip of putting a staple into the string to keep it in position on the pole too. Just starting our adventure on a much smaller plot, but we are having fun in Portugal and hoping to make our patch productive.

  11. Are you going to do something with the concrete archway (I don't know what the real name is)? I'm sure they must be meant for grapes or some other vine type plant.

  12. Very nice,👍 you are strong in the garden together. While the weather is warm on the other side of the property, build foundations for a greenhouse + a stone stove for the winter

  13. Your first tomato! Already! Edged beds look great. I’m sure all that cardboard and extra mulch will suppress the weeds.

  14. Impressive garden! You've put so much effort in so far and it shows. Enjoy the produce!

  15. your garden looks amazing!! It still so beautiful green in your area, down south here in the Algarve everything is already yellowish. The soil you got delivered and you use for the beds, what is it? Is it compost or soil, where did you get it from – a local farmer or some Multiservice Station?
What about planting into the beds with carton under. Don't young plants have troubles to go through the carton? Does it make sense to make holes. That's my next step for me in my garden in bed which I prepared similar.
    thank you!!

  16. It is just so rewarding for viewers to watch how that your gardening project is attended to with the same calm, thoughtful and staying the course attitude as we have seen both of you exhibit in your building projects. Well done … 👏👍. especially in the heat. Remember to hydrate regularly in that heat 😅

  17. Enjoyed hearing the birds along the way, seeing the wild flowers, and the photography of the garden with the various different perspectives is excellent, thank you and happy gardening! 😎👍

  18. Really love the precision of your bed layout! Great job. Can you possibly share the contact details of the compost and bark guy? We’ve only managed to get the chunky stuff for our paths. Which are admittedly a lot more wonky than yours 😊

  19. Woodchips are better than bark. Bark resists water where woodchips allows water through. Also as the woodchips break down they provide nutrients to the soil. Just don't mix them into the soil, keep them on top.
