James Prigioni: You WON’T BELIEVE what I found KILLING the Garden!

There is something lurking in the soil killing my plants and it’s not an insect! Beware because it might be your soil as well.

  1. Symphylans are anthropods that attack seedling roots. I'm a no dig, 100% organic gardener and love the science behind the micro organisms in the soil. I would try covering the whole bed with a thick layer of cardboard and top with 6 inches of cow or horse manure and leave it for a year, topping it with a good super thick leaf mulch in Autumn. This will encourage masses of worms which correct the biodiversity of the soil. ❤

  2. Always remove sick soil and plants. It only gets worse. I had to have a 1/4 of an acre removed from the ground when my guy put sterilized/dead soil down. Nothing would grow in it. I found the issue on YT by a close homesteader that moved to SC and ended up filling her giant greenhouse with the same. I never let workers unload anything so do not find and supervise. This year, I refreshed with bagged soil to be careful. I wasn’t sure anything would grow but, so far, bless it, the garden is growing. I live on a preserve island so no chemicals. The bugs and critters are insane so, I am netting this year. Squash leaves already look bad. I have great plants with horrid production. Struggling again this year. I am praying for better. Wish I had a dad or grand dad to show me. Not many people do this anymore. Sad!

  3. I might experiment with black plastic and "cook" the infested bed. I'd rather have to reintroduce micro-organisms and such than have to waste the soil and have to bring in new. Mind you, I don't have the money or the patience to do all the work of replacing, buying and refilling, so that's my excuse.
Cook it for the year, check it out in the fall, reintroduce micoryza (sp?) and such and try again to see if the little buggers survived.

  4. Maybe try covering the bed with a BLACK nylon for a month in the summer to sanitize it, this is what they do in commercial agriculture from time to time

  5. Your garden is absolutely amazing!! I love your videos! And of course tuck too!!! Thanks for the insperation!!

  6. watching your channel is uplifting not only is your garden fantastic your passion and energy is what makes this channel great. keep up the good work.

  7. I had the white ones come in a mango plant from a company, but I also see the brown ones in my own soil. I read that they cannot move through compacted soil. They are able to travel through paths created by worms, but cannot make their own. Perhaps compacting the soil may work for a bit. Also, have you tried beneficial nematodes? I wasn’t worried about them until seeing this video. Maybe I need to check where my plants aren’t doing the greatest.

  8. I love your videos. I'm interested in how you deal with brown rot? It's a real issue on our plums and I don't want to use chemicals.

  9. Throw the soil in the chicken coop for a year and collect it later and check it . They'll scratch through everything and eat them. 🙂

  10. I'm in jersey too. We're definitely tracking to plant a week early. I journal the trends in my garden every year. Even the honey bees swarmed my tree a week earlier than the last two years. LET'S GROW!!

  11. Make fire directly on the bed. Boil some water on the filre. Pour the boiling water around the fire where the heat from fire didn't hit the ground enough. Sterilize whole bed this way. Leave the bed completely barren until middle of summer. Then till the soil of the bed exposing bottom layers to the scorching sun. Dry the bed thoroughly this way. By the end of the summer, add some living compost and try to grow some plants that will last until winter or after winter.
