The Americans Growing a Food Secure Future | Farms Across America

According to the USDA, more than 38 million Americans, including 12 million children, are food insecure. With crop shortages, supply chain issues, and rising food costs, people are going hungry. The good news – is everyday Americans are hard at work growing a food secure future with sustainable farming and modern innovation.

We visit Raleigh, North Carolina where a neighborhood food bank is getting down to the root causes of hunger, helping communities find long term solutions for a food secure future. Over at National Guard HQ in Charleston, West Virginia, Brigadier General William Crane explains why food security is national security, and how the military is using agriculture to strengthen local food chains and create jobs.

Way up in Juneau, Alaska a young married couple shows us their answer to food insecurity – Panhandle Produce, a local farm store providing fresh food for Alaskans otherwise at the mercy of weeks-long supply chains. Growing food locally, says Panhandle co-founder Kylie Wray, “is a matter of our survival and sustainability as a community.”

Down in Houston, Texas, they’re up against a similar challenge and they’ve arrived at a similar solution. “Hyper local!” says Luis Silva, lead engineer at Moonflower Farms, Houston’s first indoor vertical farm. “Fighting the weather here in Texas is the hardest. I think once we figure it out here, we can figure it out anywhere in the world. Now that we’re doing a controlled environment within the farm, it’s given us an opportunity to learn a lot of what the future is going to look like.”

All across the country, these farmers and innovators are proving that the future of food doesn’t have to include hunger at all.
