Roots and Refuge Farm: Flitting around the garden (planting peppers and other things) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I 💚 the way your flower bed bed is coming together. 🤗 Just today, I had another neighbor stop to take photos and tell me how much they like the version I built out on the front corner of our lil' citystead.

  2. Regarding your decapitated seedlings, another culprit might be cutworms. Not sure if you have them there, but here in Southern Ontario, Canada they are living their best life in my raised beds. They're the larvae of a moth, so they're actually a caterpillar, that overwinter in the soil and emerge in spring to literally cut your seedlings off where they meet the soil. They do their dirty work at night and then burrow back into the soil to await new sprouts to destroy. They're usually a grey-green-black colour and quite plump. Although I'm a big believer in no-dig, I find that giving my beds a light turn about two to four inches deep in early spring unearths enough of them to reduce the damage. If I had chickens, I bet they'd love them as a treat. As an additional measure to save myself the heartache and frustration, I also place paper towel rolls around my seedlings that I've started indoors, or cut the bottoms out of used tins, push the tins into the soil and sow my seeds directly inside them. Cutworms don't climb so my seedlings are safe.

  3. WE NEED A ROOTS AND REFUGE T-SHIRT WITH A TOAD ON IT THAT SAYS "FEELING TOADY, MIGHT COME BACK NEXT YEAR!"
Id buy it and not just cuz its my idea… jussayin!

  4. Your garden is looking amazing! One thing that I found helps with little seedlings is to cover them with a clear solo cup overnight, it’s my redneck high tunnel 😂 idk if your garden is too big for that but it could help 🤷🏻‍♀️

  5. I am so in love ❤with your garden, look so peaceful. Always love ❤️ watching your video 💙💙❤️❤️❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾

  6. On Folly Beach by Karen White, Thanks for this as I pretty much grew up on Folly Beach and have been going there for over 50 years! I remember when I was a kid my parents would leave me at the amusement park to ride the rides and play games like skee ball while they went shag dancing. Another favorite place to go was Pete's that was down a ways from the main pier. Pete had killer dogs, burgers and fries and when you go to the beach, you get hungry. The owner Pete had a glass eye and that always amazed me. Oh the good ol' days! Oh yea, I spent my whole high school years surfing there too. It's not Hawaii, but it was still narly…lol

  7. Your boys are getting so big and handsome! Isn’t it such a miracle to watch a baby boy become a man? I only had boys, so that’s my experience!😂

  8. I'm also one to flit….A LOT! It drives me crazy because it keeps me from actually getting things done, but…oh well 😉

  9. It always amazes me how fast your garden grows. All of a sudden there seems to be so much out there 💕

  10. I love petunias. They remind me of my grandmother. She kept a large HEAVY pot on top of the well so nothing (or no one) could remove the lid and fall in.

  11. Moving a planter today I found a salamander googled it according to our extension office its rare for this region😃

  12. I'd recommend a dehydrater from cabelas I bought one 4 years ago its great for alot from eggs , veggies, to jerky👍

  13. I always find it funny when you are in your garden listening to a book and I am in mine listening to your videos!
We were out yesterday and made a new firepit to burn the garden logs etc that are too big too compost and my husband looked up to the trees and said he wanted to build a tree house! Miah has a new subscriber!
