  1. You mentioned sorrel and Tatertot is the biggest sorrel fan. The only thing he likes weeding is sorrel because he loves to munch on it. Lol my dad taught us to eat wild sorrel when we were growing up and my whole family loves it. I never thought about growing it purposely to eat but I’m going to look into because he would just love that.
Thanks for the video Jim. I’ve actually been waiting for it. I always forget to do something in the garden and your monthly videos really help.

  2. Wow! Your property is a stunning oasis for nature!
I know you get a lot of questions, but I'm stuck.
I have 2 Nanking Bush Cherries that got black knot a few years ago. Both were treated and cut back but keeps coming back. I wanted to transplant them at the edge of woods but there is a Wild Black Cherry tree and I have Montmorency Cherry 50' away. Will black knot spread to them too or should I just toss the Nanking Bush Cherry trees altogether since I read the fungus spreads by wind, rain, and birds.

  3. Great episode, the garden is starting to come together ..can't wait till it's all blooming..
Got a little distracted by bluebird! .thanks again for all your hard work!

  4. Jim and Steph! I actually saw a heat range listed on a plant tag at Lowe’s right beside the plants hardy zone.. maybe they’re finally hearing you regarding heat zone’s

  5. I recently shopped at Pender Pines nursery in Hampstead. I found a new (to me) ajuga. The series is called feathered friends all named for birds. Most are chartreuse. I bought parakeet and finch. Now I am wondering why I didn’t buy more?

  6. My husband and I would love to see your yard on person. WE live in Garner, on the Johnston Cty side off hwy 50. Is there any possibility of coming to visit your gardens and you sometime in May? Thank you for all of your wonderful videos and advice and knowledge! Much appreciated!

  7. Jim and Steph your garden has picked up its stride now that it's warm! It is looking so lush and so lovely! Such a labor of love and yours truly shows it
    Thank you

  8. My salvia never made it through our brutal summer. It surprises me when people talk about salvia "taking over". I'd love for them to do that for me. It's easier to pull up extra plants than to keep buying and planting. I'm in 7b, W. TN.

  9. My garden has a bluebird in residence too, and I’ve spotted a goldfinch. We just moved to SC at the beginning of November, so course I’m behind. Some trees have been planted, and some seeds have germinated under grow lights, but I completely missed on planting spring lettuce. I hope to start cool weather annuals in the fall, as well as expand existing garden beds and eliminate some I’ll- advised plant choices. Traditional large lorapetalum directly in front of living room windows could theoretically be kept pruned low, but not by me. They want to be small trees. Some of my neighbors have dug out plants, resulting in broken water pipes. I may have to do a version of no dig, mulch heavily over cardboard, and use containers until roots rot. Any advice? I’m guessing someone has had a similar issue.

  10. How do you do it? I’ve always enjoyed your videos — this is the best one yet! Not only the May “checklist”, you’ve added science, art and your personal philosophy ❤ Yes, build the soil first 👍🏻 I’m also VERY much behind for my garden this year….oops. Jim, you were very relaxed in this video. Well done!

  11. Beautiful gardens. Thanks for sharing always informative my go to!!

  12. Beautiful! Thank you Jim and Stephanie for taking the time to share your wonderful garden and for the wealth of information.

  13. I've been meaning to ask, I do leaf mulch in the fall with my yard leaves and then put wood mulch down in early spring, but every seedling I plant is killed by pill bugs which I assume are eating the leaves under the mulch. What should I do? Do I need to take the leaves out of areas I'll be planting annuals or just grow out my seeds in the bigger pot?

  14. Ugh do feel behind but here in 6a (maybe 5b) I’ve got some time- currently hand digging out an area the builders used as a dumping ground – stones 10” across 😒 I’ll be glad when it’s done

  15. I'm WAY behind this year, lol. Remember, people, do not over water! Always A+ videos on Jim's channel!

  16. Jim, I am always behind on my 1.5 acre garden in Maryland! But I am looking forward to next year when I retire and can spend every day out in the garden instead of cramming in all the work in a weekend. I want to comment on how you focus not just on the esthetics of the garden, but also on providing a healthy habitat for nature. We also provide food and nesting boxes for birds, I love to open ups the doors in the morning to listen to the birds. I am trying to work in more natives and food for pollinators. Your channel is chock full of inspiration for that. Thank you!

  17. You mentioned you do fertilize your vegetables, what is your go to product for vegetables other than compost? It's been a disappointing few years in my vegetable garden, especially tomatoes.

  18. I am behind on everything. 😂 The baby is 12 weeks old now and I’m back at work. Life with a newborn and a toddler is intense, y’all!

  19. How old is that weeping red bud I saw in the background that was at the start of the video

  20. Hi Jim, was that a begonia you were kneeling next to at the beginning of the video, and is it in the shade?

  21. First year in this house and feel overwhelmed on where to start with all of the overgrown shrubs. Boxwoods, Holly, Nandina yikes it’s everywhere! Plus, we have a woods behind us that needs to be thinned out. I really don’t want to pay someone to come in and clean this out. Any suggestions?

  22. I am loving my robins and bluebirds too. Also, the barred owls, I have only seen two since I moved to this house in 2017, but I hear them often, sometimes more than one.

  23. How is Holly doing.. Ever coming to Greensboro area.. Had several JM die , all were several years old. Ideas. Thanks

  24. Jim,
Would love it if ya did a video on ya'all's ground cover plants. Personally, I'm most interested in things for dry shade (under oaks & hickories) & wet shade.
    Thank you. 😊

  25. I prefer planting in spring bc my heavy clay soil is actually workable. In the fall it's like concrete, and I have to take the pick axe to it.
