  1. My Asian market would always have a full wall of rice, nearly up to the ceiling. It's been slowly less. This week it's about at least a third of what it was originally, other products have been put in on one side to fill up the space. My neighborhood is nearly half Asian so this is a telling sign.

  2. I live in the Southwest Desert where water is scarce as the Colorado River dries up…I have several hundred gallons properly stored but will have to use/ration carefully.

Preparing & cooking rice is very water intensive, so it has not been one of my prep pantry staples.

But maybe I can grind rice instead of cooking it? Add it to soups etc – ground rice seems nutritious.

Mortar & Pestle or a Coffee Grinder:)

  3. "Rice is rice" … only IF it is rice.

Far too many bags of rice from China have been found to be doped with bits of plastic.

    Be careful what you buy.

  4. An El Nino is predicted and this will mean a very dry time for Asia. If so rice will be scarcer in the future, investing in it now would be a good idea.
I am a long term low carber and have found it useful. But if you feel you cannot stop eating carbs there is another solution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULLsus3qdo0 This lady talks about how she stopped chasing diets and started intermittent fasting and lost weight without worrying about what she ate. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6pnxoncH7Y&t=1449s Here is another lady who lost her weight the same way and has kept it off for four years as she has documented in a series of You Tube videos. A Canadian Nephrologist has spent years studying fasting in treating his patients Jason Fung has a wealth of good information on You Tube. Hope you find this useful. BTW look up autophagy, the researcher who discovered this got the 2016 Nobel Medicine prize.

  5. Thank you for your video.

We have a whack of TFW's here, mostly from Thailand, and there were a lot from Mexico but not so many now, god bless them. They are nice people from my experience and that's all I like people to be, …. is nice.

Anyway A good quality Jasmine went on sale a while back for $15 for 8kg and I went to pick up two bags only to find the Super Store sold out on the first day of the sale.
The cashier was telling me they were leaving the store two carts loads at a time, one cart to push and one to pull.
Even the hastily placed "Limit of six bags per customer" didn't slow down the rush.
So I got a rain-check for the six bag limit and then the last day of the sale I found six bags to buy so I bought them.
The next week the very same rice was $27 plus change and there were pallets of the stuff. I hauled out my rain-check and got six more bags.

I found out that a lot of the TFW's were talking to their people back home and hearing reports of problems getting enough Rice so they were stalking up here just to be safe. I don't blame them at all.
Stocking up for most people here means buying lots of Pop and Chips, … True story, … Oh, Bread and Milk too, if there's any money left over from the Pop and Chips that is.
    Silly people.

It's funny but I like to mix up my Rice getting all different kinds and brands. Par-boiled would be my least favorite but I'm sure it will serve it's purpose in soups and whatnot.

    Good lluck.

  6. I literally just did this with my blueberry bushes to see if I can get them to root in a glass of water (with a little rooting powder on them). Pretty sure yours are going to grow just fine, and sure hope mine do. Free to try though, gotta love that. 🙂 Thanks for posting this!

  7. Hi Toni – enjoyed your video very much. Adding more rice to my stores as well on Monday when I go to the city. I might add some sugar as well as I go through a lot during baking season – most of which gets donated to food bank. We too are trying to keep our sugar consumption down, but there are a few items which my husband really enjoys – pumpkin pie and loaf and muffins – at least these can be frozen and doled out carefully. I love mincemeat tarts, but only make them once a year, my biggest passion is shortbread cookies. I have stocked up on large bags of spices – repackaged into smaller amounts for long term storage – these make excellent trade items. The seeds in the greenhouse are sprouting nicely – soon will be up-potting them out of starter trays. Our weather is still iffy, but hoping it will start getting warmer soon.

  8. I don't have that opportunity to go "local" and buy in bulk. I bought 30 pounds from Amazon. Only place I can get it.

  9. So lovely to be able to harvest your own asparagus… and rhubarb as well. Delicious!
I had no idea that you can make new lavender plants like that 😅 I love lavender. Last month I attended a workshop where I was taught how to make essential lavender oil using a simple water distiller. The process looked simpel but was tricky and required so much lavender for just a tiny bit of oil… although the scent was enchanting 😍
Regarding the sugar. When my sons were still kids I would only buy sugar to bake cakes etc. Last couple of years hardly any sugar in the house. But now I have around 20 kg in my pantry… because of a new hobby. I ferment a sugar wash and then distill alcohol using the water distiller! I am starting a simple first aid cabinet with tinctures made from medicinal herbs I mostly can find here in Amsterdam.
Plus I like to make liqueurs like limoncello. Or I experiment. Last week I let orange peels and a split vanilla bean macerate in alcohol. Combined with some sugar syrup and water it was lovely. I just ordered some erythritol to use instead of sugar as that does not spike my insuline the way normal sugar does.

    Have good weekend Toni! 🙋‍♀️

  10. I watched your video from yesterday, in which you spoke of an upcoming rice shortage. I must have missed the video where you explained this. Is there a specific reason to expect this shortage?

  11. Very timely as I seem to be extremely incompetent at starting lavender from seed and not even from cuttings😱 So, I'm heading out to the garden to take cuttings and give your method a try! Also plan to do that with blueberry bushes! Just bought 5 new plants but one can just never have too many blueberry bushes😎 We went to our business Costco and regular Costco yesterday and both places were well stocked with rice and most everything else. But, prices just keep going up and if I don't get something now, by next week it will be even more expensive. I've been getting Calrose rice which I kind of accidentally got a small bag once and found out it was really good! We all need to just keep prepping, growing and preparing the best we can! We did order a new freezer and am hoping to find an organic/grass fed cattle producer here in WA state. My understanding is that they are trying to put the mRna into our meat supply! Someone mentioned on another channel that this may also already be in pork products!👿 Don't know if that's true but at this point anything is possible! Have a wonderful day!🇺🇸🤗

  12. Toni would you consider making ricotta cheese. The brand without cellulose is 7.98! With homo milk at 5.49 for 4litres. Could you do half ricotta and the rest mozzarella?

  13. Toni, Hello and thank you for today's video mentioning stocking-up on sugar, because it reminds me that I need to get some. I rarely use it for human consumption, but we use it to make hummingbird nectar. We do have hummingbirds year-round here in Southern California, and we feed them.

I also thank you for the info about propagating lavender. I will have my husband watch this video. Last month he bought a few potted lavender plants and I think he will be very interested. He is a big tea drinker and used to buy tins of Earl Grey loose tea mixed with lavender at a Kroger-owned supermarket, but they haven't had any for a few months. So he purchased some plants which are growing nicely. He cuts off some twigs and then dries them. We bought a bag of Earl Grey loose tea at a local Super King (a market with all sorts of international foods and prices lower than Kroger's). Then my husband adds the dried lavender. This turns out to be much better, much tastier and less expensive than the Kroger product.

I like and subscribed and always look forward to your next YouTube videos.

  14. Remember, even if we're trying to cut back ob sugar, it never hurts to have extra around…possible barter item. This morning I went to an area Walmart to grab a few things….at every store I check foods that are marked down really cheap and grab them for possible barter items if it's something I don't really use. Well today at this particular Walmart they were having free samples because of the store remodel…I got a package of free Torke`coffee! We don't drink coffee, but I occasionally use it in a recipe, but immediately I thought, possible barter item. Every time I go to any store, unless I'm in a big hurry, I check ALL clearance sections repeatedly. The other day I got several bottles of salad dressing, marinades and salsa so cheap! Some will get used, but most just goes into our stash for now.

  15. I didn’t know it was so easy to toot Lavender Toni thanks for sharing this with us! Yes please stick your staples while you can , here we are seeing some sparse snd empty shelves in my area , it’s coming much faster than we’d hoped it would ! I’m glad your soon gonna be able to get a little out of your garden !! God bless ❤️🙏🙋🏻

  16. I think your daughter is right about the sugar/carbs. I know it is hard to cut back, too!

You may want to save some sugar for bartering. Like, divide it up into cup size amounts and just put it away.

  17. Good afternoon Ms Toni. I’m glad that you were able to get more rice for your stock. I also went this morning and picked up two 20lb bags of long grain white rice. It was $10.97 at our local Wally World. It’s in the freezer right now for a couple of days and then I’ll oven can it in jars which will be my immediate stock to use. I have several 5gal buckets of rice in Mylar that are long term storage. I may get more rice next week, but also want to add more salt, specifically canning salt to my stock. Along with sugar and rice shortages, I figure that salt will also become an important commodity. Thank you for the video! Have a blessed day!

  18. Just checked the East Indian store where I can get 10 lb bags of basmati rice…all sold out…! All the different companies I have 40 lbs…but would like to have 60 lbs..I am alone…will check at Maxis on Tuesday ..

  19. Cut carbs??!!! No no…I like rice and pasta and good bread over cake
and cookies any day. Glad to hear you are the same. Much luck with
    that lavender.

  20. Hi Toni, Did your lavender overwinter inside or out? Mine has never survived the winters. Do you do something to get them thru the winter? Thanks

  21. It will be raining all week and a lot next week, in my town an hour North of Mintreal..at least it will melt the rest of the snow..but looking at temperatures all the way to seventh of May, nights are cold..4 degrees C..felling like 0…It will be a while before soul warms up…I feel most of my planting, will be done in June…lettuce can probably be started end of May…happy to growing cherry tomatoes..everything is uncertain..just don't know what type of summer we will have..for growing…adaptation..being grounded..calm..intuitive..exercising..breath exercises..is what is keeping me balanced..but hobestly…ut is a daily decision..and taking the steps to keep going..even if it means taking a nap when tired…self- care has never been so important…

  22. Hi Toni.
About the rhubarb, if it's the first year you have planted it, you might want to not harvest it this year. The advice is to wait at least one year, before harvesting it.

  23. I don't do things the hard way, either. If I can propagate from stems, I do that!💖💖

  24. Stores will often stock staples like milk, rice, bread, etc. in the far ends of the store so customers have to pass all kinds of other products to buy extras on impulse.😉
I picked kale and lettuce from my garden already. My chives are ready for their first harvest. Snow drops are finished blooming. Daffodils and Hyacinth are in full bloom. Tulips are starting to open. Isn't springtime great!😃👍

  25. It doesn’t matter what kind of food you eat, protein, carbs, or fats, but it’s all about calories in versus calories out and your activity level. This has been proven to be so by those that practice it and have the data to support it. Plus, it’s common sense really.
Sugar is just another carb, which is your source of energy; it’s also not the best carb to choose, mind you, but natural sugars in fruits and honey are still good to have, just not the processed crap sugar.

  26. Rice is not rice. China has even added plastic pellets to rice, or at least that is what I have seen on some videos. Not sure if that is true. 😉
