Roots and Refuge Farm: FULL Garden Tour | Late April 2023

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. 🙋‍♀️Did I miss the the first rows of succession planted cilantro? 🤔

  2. I love these tours! It’s only my second year gardening so I use these as great lessons on laying out the area. Hopefully I can feed family and friends this summer!

  3. Loved the tour and I'm exhausted just thinking of all the work you guys have put into all the structures you guys have constructed already. But it looks beautifully you!! You have inspired this 61 yr old gardener to make a tunnel cattle panel trellis, and my hubby is 65, and he is super talented with DIY's, so he's having fun making some great raised beds! You are absolutely right about its art but with a purpose. Hope everyone takes your ideas into consideration and making it their own and get super inspired from all you guys' hard work!! Stay amazing, Jess

  4. I follow you inspiration as to having a chair or sitting area in all my garden areas plus in my chicken yard. Love my chickies & duckies

  5. I've been told that planting seeds is best in the morning and seedlings in the late afternoon/evening, then there is the waxing and waning moon as well. What do you think of these ideas.

  6. Hey Jess I'm sending you guys blessings of abundance and health and happiness for your season ahead 🙏 as we head well into Winter in South Africa and say goodbye to our summer crops ❤ you keep Summer alive by sharing your journey with us xxx thank you so much

  7. Its awesome to see your gardens they are so pretty you have done an awesome job in just 2 years love it and thanks for sharing God said it was more blessed to give than to receive theats what have always done never sold anything from my gardens

  8. Oh Jess! I absolutely adore you referring to transplanting plants and saying it's like the Hunger Games, "May the odds ever be in your favor" because I swear that is my motto for gardening any time. LOL Even if I THINK I "know what I'm doing", I'm really just going on someone else's experience, my long-ago experiences, or no information at all and just doing the best I can where I am. I do keep notes to refer back to, especailly when looking at new garden spaces or opportunities to grow "all the things". I enjoy your videos very much, thank you!

  9. Jess, pretty is nice but have you thought of a patch of Mixed Wild Flowers for the Hell of it. Seeing a field of wildflowers in nature is like viewing Gods handiwork imho.

  10. Funnily enough my favorite time to garden was at night. I built my last garden in 2021 between the hours of 8-11pm dug it by hand and planted, weeded and tied everything by headlamp 🙈😂

We’ve since moved to Tennessee and the buyer of my previous home probably leveled and seeded it with grass but such is life right?! I learned SO much. Mostly from Jess, David the Good and Gary from rusted garden, so that’s what I’m doing again. Learning while we wait for a property that we can acquiring and gardening in plastic tubs from walmart (and before we @ me for the plastic tubs, I’m gonna use them for worm bins after we move one day :))

  11. The reduced plants…we call it death row. Berries are the best use of excess space for me, grow the most expensive things, and also the tastiest.

  12. Your no longer the small home gardener. You've become a big farm. I think it's great cuz you've said that it's all your dreams coming true. I just can't relate. I don't have money to build and have employees. It's just me and my land trying to grow more and preserve more.

  13. So dilemma, any suggestions how keep and jumper out of beds? A puppy who can jump up to a 3 ft. tall raised bed. I haven't caught him in the act but he's so naughty, He's digging up my garlic daily and onlon starts. I'm afraid to fill my Greenstalk as that will be next.. HELP!!

  14. When I harden off plants to the sun, the patio is half shaded, I just move them in and out till they can take the full sun. I keep them well watered and they do just fine.

  15. Instead of covering with cardboard I put an empty pot over for a day. I use all sizes depending on the size of the plant!

  16. Beautiful!!!! ❤❤ love these videos! The drone overhead views help SOOOOO much! I’ve struggled to get motivated this spring (cold and wet) and your videos excite me to get outside!

How do you water each area?

How do you remember where you plant things?

  17. I'm loving the garden so excited for this year.
Jess, can you ask Green Stalk to open base in the UK I really want some. Yours look amazing ❤

  18. If a person doesn't love gardening, food security will forever be a challenge. One can't be secure just by just putting seeds in the ground.

  19. I was just wondering..I thought I remembered someone saying before that they liked to plant some type of flowers in the garden too and I couldn't remember if there was a certain reason like to maybe keep certain bugs away or anything and what type. I saw some marigolds the other day and got me wondering about that and plus I was just really wanting them lol.

  20. I love absolutely every bit of everything that you share with us! I love it when Miah brings you a cup of coffee, when the two of you dream together, plan together, and I absolutely loved how you talked about you and Ezra spending first thing in the morning working clay together at the kitchen counter❣️❣️❣️

  21. Does anyone else think they have the same size garden as Jess. Trying to plant as many thinks as she does when your gardne has less space than 1 of the long beds 😂

  22. I often poke a dead stick with brown leaves on it in the ground – next to plants when I plant out. I don't really need to harden off long that way. Protects from the sun during the heat of the day.

  23. My garden is certainly my art.. I am also a horse trainer/ riding instructor and that is very much my base line artistic flow… but my garden is more my personal vibe for my artistic endeavors! 🥰🫶🏼🥹

  24. I would so be sitting at the red table by the no dig garden. I love the few of the garden and the farm in the background.❤
