Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

Do you know if you’ve done a video on how you deal with squash vine borer? If not I’m vvvvery interested lol
I also have a hard time ending volunteers 😅
Edit: Oop! Lol nevermind, I just found the section in your book dedicated to pests. I hadn’t gotten that far yet 💚
I was concerned that you might have gotten some ‘bad’ potting soil or something like that. Sounds like you have things figured out. Covid did change things.
This vlog was so super helpful.
I have been racking my brain about my seedlings. Same trays, same light set up (never comes down), Same seeds. Last year I had 100% germination with both my pepper and tomato seeds. Thus year, I've had to restart them (and many other seeds) a few times. I use the same organic seed starting mix, but I started to wonder if it was the soil mix. I started to think I was crazy. I went out and bought new mix. Way better germination.
I kept the old starts and noted the tomato stems were purplish. I thought it was odd.
You have clarified all of this for me, and now I know I'm not crazy or neglectful of my seedlings.
Thanks for the knowledge.
Jess, you need some retractable hoses. It looks like it's just too easy to trip over a hose.
When the kids come over do you put your dogs up? Just curious
Bless you😊
Ok Jess, I need your hat!
Can you share where I might find it😀😀😀
I am having the same problem you are with my peppers being stunted😭😭
I thought you gave/ sold honey to the Rhodes. Or was their a different one or was she there to get pregnant. I thought there was a cow from your farm that went to live with the Rhodes. I got something crossed
Aww, my little seedlings are actually stretching for the sparse lights I have and are not stunted. As soon as the outdoor temps aren't so cold I'll transition them into a teensie "greenhouse" grow-shelf during daytime and then snatch them back indoors during evenings. One of these days I'll be able to afford grow lights and proper racks for seed starting but until then, I will make-do. You are such an inspiration, Jess. This time of year in Eastern Washington state, we don't have to worry too much about high temperatures, haha. Hope that you feel blessed with the seedlings growing from all your plantings.
Hope you have a blessed weekend!!
Shepard's are so fun, they all seem to have such personalities, and you just got to love the head tilts when you talk to them. Mine breaks out with the Elvis lip when you tell him No.
Bear is too funny! Haven't seen the other dogs lately. How are Katie, the black and white puppy and the others?
Jess, Sift your potting soil before starting seeds. This eliminates all of the large pieces. Have Miah make you a strainer.
I love your haircut and the hat!
Bear is truly living his best life! ❤
💜😎
I love that you did that with your sons class that's excellent!! I used to grow extra tomato plants to bring to my children's classmates! They loved it and were so thankful!! Bout those sunflowers, I've had some success by staking them in that condition seem to eventually take off
The stunted starts could also be the roots being stressed when transplanting. That's why I did cell trays when I had a nursery so there's as little transplant shock as possible. Plus all the other things you stated.
🙂💖❇❇❇
I saw Bear and i said out loud…"Bear!" hehe – Chuckles at Bear rolling around:) – Why can't you leave the zinnias cuz the bees would love them.
I used potting soil, not potting mix…is that OK.? I have a week ahead with night time Temps in the low 40's. Is it safe to direct sow cucumbers, peppers. Northern Virginia area. Thanks
😊I LOVE your gardening, your gardens the animals, children ,
your knowledge and enthusiasm… and all the information you share with us…THANK YOU!
(P.S.
You are the daughter I never had)
I was able to get mushroom compost & my plants are absolutely gorgeous. In years past I’d use the normal bagged soil & my plants were ok. After the mushroom compost my plants could be in a garden magazine & the earthworm population has exploded. You can’t dig anywhere in the garden with out see a dozen worms & new babies. I don’t need worm compost tea, they are tea teaing ( hee hee hee) everywhere. Thank y’all Have a wonderful weekend
I'm currently dealing with stunted seedlings myself. But they're starting to improve with fertilizing.
Nice raised beds
Ive grown ALL my seed packs of peppers and eggplant 2x this year already and completely stunted. Did them both in different soil and different ways. New seeds…just nada. 😒
Your garden is a joy to see as well as the whole farm
2 years ago I had really badly stunted seedlings and ended up buying a lot of seedlings. Still not sure what it was exactly
That’s beautiful, thank you for being a positive contributor to your community. ❤️
If they're compatible, leave the volunteers in place!
If you want to talk to us, perhaps go out of the greenhouse if you need those fans. Suggestion for next year to’have more functionning windows for’cross ventilation
I totally messed up my tomatoes this year thank u now I know exactly what went wrong 😢 thank u for sharing your knowledge my potting mix this year was more barky I had big chunks of wood so I mixed worm castings and over did it so my tomatoes r purple and some leafs yellow
If you want to feed the seedling without having them too wet, foliar feeding is key
Thankyou Jess, i really appreciate this video ( i appreciate them all !). It explained why we were having problems with our seed starting,we have been using a lovely natural compost but it does have woody bits in, it all makes sense now, thankyou so much!
You look cute in your hat. Happy gardening,
