Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Wow! I love the crop of tposts and trellises you're growing! Going to try putting an arch or two in my in ground garden this year. Little worried it will be too narrow but I am sure it will still add loveliness.

  2. I got a handy little folding step stool from Home Goods for like $8 and keep it in my garden. It’s lightweight, has a handle, and folds up flat. It has become my portable sitting stump. 🪵

  3. Thank God for men in our lives. I wanted the garden and my husband saw the utility in having one so his help in making the beds, putting in the posts for the trellises, carrying the big bags of soil and amendments, building my compost sifter that’s custom made for the wheelbarrow, etc. He’s helped in so many ways that would have taken me hours to complete if I tried on my own.

I’m pregnant now so he has to do way more while working his regular job too. He seems nervous about doing the seedlings and planting them haha. I have to help him with the delicate stuff. =)

  4. I love cattle panel trellises. They just have that practical aesthetic that I love. When the plants grow on them, they look so good. I’m hoping to set one up as an opening arch in my future herb garden on the side of my house. I want to grow the native passionflower (also a medicinal herb) as the vine that will grow up the sides.

So many plans! So much work to do. But so excited for the next few years to get everything completed. ^_^

  5. When we ladies say a dad joke, they're called "faux pa" jokes 😅😉 Get it…because we're not a real dad 😂

  6. This is my second year gardening and we just invested in a 16 cattle panel trellis and a soaker hose! I feel like I learned so much last year and I feel SO hopeful for this year.

  7. Love gardening videos where people don’t do so much talking and “ get er done!” 😅wishing I had so much muscle in my garden!! 😂

  8. My husband and I have an ongoing playful argument about whether mom jokes or dad jokes are funnier. 😁

  9. I usually get about 150 chayote each year from our vine. For me the vines usually last about three years, and then I replace it with a younger vine. Mine ripen at the end of summer beginning of fall. You can also eat the young tendrils of the vines. The squash takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with so I love them in curries and soups. Some people are sensitive to the squash as they peel it so keep it under the water faucet or wear gloves if you think it might affect your skin.

  10. Ok I have to ask, how do you guys afford all of the new additions on your farm? It's so beautiful, but in addition to repurposing materials, there must be quite an investment continuously going in. I'd be really interested in seeing how you guys have been able to gradually increase what you began with in the beginning of your farming/homesteading journey. God bless you all. Keep being the light.

  11. It is NOW officially a #Roots&Refuge Garden!!
Yay!! Thanks Jessica for bringing us along for this moment! I bless YOU! All Glory to Him!

  12. I was missing your old garden and rewatching your old videos but I think your garden is back! It will be Glorious.

  13. Jess Sweetie, It doesn't matter if they are uneven, the plants don't care! They don't care about imperfection. Nature is a model of imperfect perfection! Love and hugs, Z

  14. Dear Jess, I love your tattoos so much. I have several myself, every one of them has a special meaning.
I had a sunflower Steve sunflower done on my elbow in memory of my son who passed. It would have been his 21st birthday in January. ❤

  15. Chayote/Mirliton/Alligator Pear is one of my favorites 💚 I pronounce it Meliton, the NewOrleans way. We love it in Cajun shrimp dressing, especially on holidays. Mine survived the arctic blast against a south facing wall and was attacked by fire ants and it’s now putting on new growth. My best advice is watch lots of videos about how to plant it and notice the roots come from the top and go down. Plant the whole thing. You’re going to love them!

  16. I saw the beds in an earlier video and was sad to see few trellises. Was SO happy to see this video of you putting them up! I can't wait to see how your garden turns out this year! Thanks to you and your videos (first one I ever saw was on FB) I've set up some cattle panel trellises for the first time, both arches and tomato panels… so excited!

  17. This is exactly why I follow RnR. I’m enjoying the garden aesthetic and the Daniel’s peaceful guitar instrumental music. It’s so lovely 🌻🍅🌻❤

  18. I love watching your garden come together. We’re south of Nashville, TN and about a month behind you on planting. It’s so peaceful to simply watch you guys working on your garden. I anxiously await a video every day. Thank you for taking time to bring us along.

  19. Looks great. You're old videos helped me design my new garden section. Currently working on redesigning the old section. I'm excited for you to have your happy space back.

  20. Hi Jess! I love these trellises! I'm putting up my first one this year. So excited! Do you have a strategy on how you place them? Or where rather.😊

  21. that green veggie is a meliton´(mel lee tau) it is a good ole cajun food we mix with shrimp and ground meat. We boil scoop out the meat inside and smoother down with onions and choice of meat. Yummy

  22. Lovely to see arches back in your garden, it looks more and more like your Root and Refuge every week ❤

  23. Jess, you need to get you some wide brim straw hats to wear outside in the garden. I wear mine all the time outside.
