Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Stunted tomatoes seedlings? Why npt give them a little coffee. Yes, make a pot of coffee and then add 2 pots of water to it. Give it to your tomatoes seedlings when you water them in place of the water. Also, coffee is good for blueberry bushes and any acid soil loving plant. My grandparents used to buy the cheapest coffee just for their acid soil loving plants and trees.
They did this every spring after the trees and blueberry bushes started showing buds. With trees that love acid soil give them one full pot of coffee and only add 1 pot of water to it. Same with the blueberry bushes. Tomatoes and other garden plants use only as much of the adde 2 pots of water as you would when using normal water. There was instances when a trees or plants that love acid soil that my grandfather would do a acid test on. If it was low and the growing season he would give it more coffee. Do not water its stem or leaves. But water from the bottom. In a green stalk I do not know how much water it holds but you would want the same ratio for each plant.

  2. Love a twilight garden video. I wonder if the frost topped that cabbage? Hoping your warm weather keeps coming up here so I can finish getting my beds ready here and start planting some of my hardy stuff.

  3. 🥬🥬CABBAGE 😍All I see there is quarts and quarts of kimchi!! 💡Pick the 3 headed one, make kimchi, and name it “MEDUSA CABBAGE KIMCHI”!!!😂

  4. I work 9-5 so lots of my gardening is done in the dark! 😂 20 + years ago when I put in my first garden I made my husband set up klieg lights. I planted until 2 am. Pretty sure my neighbors thought I was nuts but they enjoyed the squash, okra and all the things that came in abundance when we couldn’t keep up with it.

  5. Hi Jess!! Do you like Hummus? Have you thought about growing chick peas? I watched CHICKPEA How does it grow? and Eat fresh chickpeas? Yes! And grow them too by the channel TRUE FOOD TV. You should really check her out she goes to the places growing them and tells you all the interesting facts.

  6. OOOOH, Let the 3-headed cabbage go to seed. Harvest the seeds and see if the trait is heritable. Smaller cabbage heads might be better for single people and/or people with patio/balcony space only!

I always heard that brassicas are not good for horses (and rabbits).

  7. I've had a cabbage do that, but it was because the deer were pruning my garden for me!😂 and the ducks and geese would also appreciate some greens! Love your videos, as always, they give me much needed peace while I'm away from my homestead ❤

  8. GM Jess☕️☕️. Your greenhouse & raised bed area is to die for ❤. It portrays a place of grateful work, peace all around & I can picture you sitting in the rocking chair in such a tranquil moment of satisfaction.
I puttered in the garden & GH a bit yesterday but it is still to cold to do much more. And falling a couple months ago left me with compressed fracture on my lower 3 rd vertebrae & major muscle bruising/ damage. It just plain sucks to get old at times ROFLM@O😖🤪
    Have a great day 👵🏻👩‍🌾❣️

  9. Usually seedings get leggy if they aren't getting proper light and get stunted if to cold or to hot. When temps fluctuate to much they conserve resources (water, sugars, nutrients) by slowing their metabolism down. I fear we all will be dealing with this more are these wild swings in temps become more frequent.

  10. Love❤your farm! I'm glad you mentioned the micro-dwarf tomatoes. The whole idea of this really intrigued me from the time you posted about the seeds. My life is half mobile these days in a travel van as I'm not quite sure what my next step in life is. I know God has a plan. Anyway, I started growing Orange Hat, Pinocchio Orange, and Vilma. The Orange Hat had fantastic germination, but I lost most of the seedlings. Pinocchio Orange mostly hasn't gotten past the first true leaves. Vilma is doing better with two sets of true leaves. All were planted last week in February in seed starter and used 3 different types of grow lights. My "grow room" started with a south facing window sill and grew to racks in a spare bedroom and over 40 tomato plants of various varieties 😂😂

  11. I was lucky enough to get the VGF Mix & VGF Lemondrop seeds with the second sale. It meant the world to me and I too have been extremely excited (but also a lil scared) to plant these precious seeds. I will be planting them in an area that is to be added to each year in honor of my Aunt Judy. My love of sunflowers started with her. I will be planting most in ground but will also do a couple in pots w/ a heat pad on her earthly birthday 4/19. I'm starting a few on a heat mat with hopes that a few sprout by her first heavenly birthday 4/27. I've been designing, building, and filling multiple raised beds over the last month and a half but will be planting my sunflowers (not just Sunflower Steve's) in the ground and a few in very large pots and a very deep cloth raised bed. We've been building out our entire corner lot front yard while my hubby is out of work. It's been physically, mentally, and spiritually therapeutic. It's helped my hubby to still feel like needed and kept our minds off the things that are mostly out of our control while still having a sense of productivity and accomplishment. For so many reasons, I cannot wait to see what our garden will become this year!

  12. Just a caution about throwing things for your horses to eat. Their digestive system is pretty delicate compared to other livestock. You may have already done research about them but had a bad bout of colic when the Doctor I worked for threw corn shucks and cobs out for a treat for the stallion. Love all you and Miah do. Enjoying his new channel and your podcasts too. ❤

  13. I’m growing my microdwarf tomatoes in my AeroGarden. Not sure if they need pollinators so I put the AeroGarden outside today for a couple hours.

  14. Garden looks good. Like the tetras type design beside the high tunnel. I have had multiple head cabbages before and to be honest, they will not amount to anything. At least that has been my experience. Still edible but there won't be much. Chances are the center of the plant was damaged in some way which forced it to send out the side shoots.

  15. If I didn't garden in the almost dark it would be miserable since I'm in the central Florida heat already.

  16. I had a cabbage plant with double heads last year. It was because the plant got nibbled on when it was really tiny which made it branch. Same thing that happens to plants when you pinch on purpose to encourage branching.
