Repotting a 500+ Year Old Bonsai | Bonsai Heirloom

Welcome! I’m bonsai master Dr. Milton Chang! You guys seem to really enjoy when I show my collection of older trees, so today, I’d like to show you one go my oldest and most treasured trees. This California Juniper is 500+ years old! We’re going to repot this together and I will walk you through my process. Repotting benefits the plant because you can remove unhealthy roots to allow new ones to grow, and you can set the plant in a new pot to change up its look in your garden.

  1. I love the no nonsense perspective you take to bonsai. Just common sense knowledge

  2. Awesome, just today was looking for easy bonsai soil mix. And the one I found is similar to yours, definitely will use it.

  3. Bonjour Monsieur Chang. Vos conseils sortent de l'ordinaire et sont très intéressants. Je vous remercie pour cette vidéo!

  4. Really interesting, very different to the traditional potting methods. I am still learning about soils, and have lots to learn. Thanks for the great content!

  5. The substrate used may or may not work for you. Choice of substrate and percentages of what you use should be tailored for your climate.

  6. Thanks for your nice videos which are full of common sense far from Talibans of bonsai.

  7. Dr. Chang: It's refreshing to see a man with your IQ and success take time to share your personal passion and horticultural expertise with us. I too, prefer using my own custom-blend soil vs. akadama. May your YT channel grow just as big & beautiful as your Bonsai's.

  8. Doctor Chang. If the Bonsai Tree that Old why is there not much Roots to keep it healthy? Do you collect Your own Yamadori Trees ? Thanks for you Video.

  9. Fantastic video showing repotting a 500 year old tree using his well tried method without all the messing about that we are told we should be doing, I do like his idea about using screening to line the pot to help the tree self prune the roots. Thank you for a no nonsense lesson on repotting trees.

  10. Proof that there is no universally "correct" way to do Bonsai (soil mix, repotting etc.). Whatever works, works!
A great video with clear and simple instructions.
