“Hope sleeps in our bones like a bear waiting for spring to rise and walk.” -Marge Piercy

Welcome to my garden! Today I am attacking my HUGE hedge of plumbago and pruning in right back to the ground! This is a flower bed on the East side of my home and I am starting to make some plans for it!!! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! 🌿 Enjoy!

  1. I saw your side yard idea (espalier honeysuckle) on Garden Answer, very clever idea and it must smell heavenly there!

I'm in central Texas, we have lots of Plumbago here as well. It's a bitter sweet plant. The blooms remind me of hydrangea a bit (those are difficult to grow here), so I like to use plumbago, but it does have a very rangey, unkempt habit. Spot on with the pruning and time if year. I ran across a plumbago that was trellised at a nursery last summer! Who knew?! I never knew it could be trellised. So I'm going to try that this year with one of mine. Perhaps that might be an option that would help you keep it tidy looking and still have those glorious blooms! They really are special because that blue color is not common in nature's blooms.

  2. Love plumbago. We have one planted between other established bushes and my husband cuts it back every year. I did notice that it was hit with our last freeze. I like it so much I bought 2 more I found in the Lowes clearance area.

  3. I can’t believe your city will pick all that up! We blow leaves into the street before the street sweeper comes, but any branches have to go into our yard waste can to be picked up e/o week. Ours fills quite fast!
I’ve never espaliered anything before. With those long stems, do you think it would work with a plumbago plant? I love the bluish flowers and am looking for ideas for my narrow side yard.

  4. Plumbagos grow runners which become new plants. I have one that I have had since 1994 or so. Love the blooms. Very good to trim and see how it grows back. Thanks for all of the tips! 💗 Live in 10b in north county San Diego.

  5. do you fertilize plumbagos? Mine have been looking very light green… have you have that happen to yours?

  6. Your plumbago blooms only a couple of months? That's weird. Mine is completely covered in light blue flowers from March till December.

  7. I already follow you and I was looking for advice on how to severely prune a plumbago. I just clicked on the video and was delighted to find you here. Thanks for this, once again lol

  8. You can give some as gifts
    Rick keeps weeds away.
But you did a fantastic job
    Your a hard worker.
I just planted some in a pot to start. I'll see what happens. 🐈
