Damage From Not Hardening Off Explained Garden Quickie Episode 134

Hardening Off Your Seedlings And Young Plants Is Not Optional! While its a simple process that usually only takes 1-2 weeks to accomplish, acclimating your young plants and seedlings to the rigors of outdoor life is a must if you want to be successful.

In today’s Quickie, we’ll look at what happens when you don’t harden off your plants and just stick them straight outside. Its not pretty, and I don’t advise it!

It feels just like yesterday I started this series. I’ve compiled an entire playlist of them here, check it out!: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLiie7K8ZgA_I1trKU0lbcCqf4NK2f3nhf

  1. THANK YOU JEFF. WE HAVE SOME STRONG BEAUTIFUL SQUASH AND ZUCCHINI AND 1 TOMATO PLANT. BUT TEMPS HAVE DROPPED AGAIN FOR A WEEK. SO WE WILL SEE AFTER THAT. FATHER GOD BLESS YOU JEFF AND YOUR FAMILY IN JESUS NAME ๐Ÿ™ โค ๐Ÿ™Œ

  2. I live in the windiest area of the United States and I worry about that a lot. I'm very new to gardening and haven't heard of hardening off. I've been doing it anyway to an extent just bc when the plants are so wee, I don't feel right leaving them out of day and night lol but now I know what I'm doing and why. Instinct is a very cool thing ๐Ÿค—

  4. Great advice! Its been a unusually cold spring here in zone 3 but currently hardening off onions , Katz stock, alpine strawberries , wallflowers and potentilla. Dino kale is a mainstay up here.

  5. Virginia zone 7A. I started hardening off my seedlings last weekend and this weeks temperature swings from daytime highs of 80s to now low 50s is just crazy. W had two days that were very windy and gusts up to 30 mph. I eventually had to bring them all back inside. I didn't want any broken stems. Today, 4/7, it's 53 degrees and raining off and on all day. Just crazy weather.

  6. Good video, just wish you would have shortenthe damage and given so e time on best t harden them off and for how long.

  7. This is so true, inside started plants have been artificially protected. Once outside, Mother Nature is not as kind to these plant babies. To protect from harsh winds, I take semi-rigid screening (about 24-36 inches tall) and create cones around the plant until the stalks firm up. It allows them to move (which is what strengthens the stalk) but prevents them from getting bent over to the point of disaster. Also doubles as a good deterrent from aerial bird attacks on them too. lol

  8. Love this channel. I love pretty much all the gardening channels I'm subscribed to but you're one of the VERY few cold climate gardeners and living in Northern Ontario (Zones 3b to 4a) it feels like a LOT of Canadian gardeners are left out. So THANK YOU for your channel. Go Riders!

  9. Absolutely! I have a rack of seedlings outside now. With the big weather swings happening here in MO, the hardening off process is going slowly, but I refuse to try and skip it, even though my beautiful brussels and lettuce are ready to go outside. Mine seem to have the wind and the temp down from putting the rack in front of the open window inside but it is the sunlight I am cautious of right now. Every time we have a clear day they spray a bunch of lines in the sky and then it is hazy, windy, and weird. Hope your season is an abundant harvest.

  10. This is my first year starting from seed. I would have never known about hardening off if I hadn't watched your videos. You're the best!

  11. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ yea guilty as charged, I can only garden when I have time off, so my seedlings kinda get traumatized as I kick them outside like 80s kids

  12. Here in Idaho, wind is nearly a constant. I harden my plants in my south facing garage. I give them several days of the door being closed but not dark. Then starting with one hour, I open the door adding another hour daily. The garage doors make it easy to regulate sunshine and protects them partially from the wind. Once I think I have done this enough its out to the greenhouse to await the planting time, here it is around mid May.

  13. I put my plants in my screened in porch for two days. They get some light through the lattice and get all of the wind. My tomatoes are currently outside after doing this, just waiting for me to be the time to put them in the ground.

  14. Doing that right now with my tomatoes, cucs and squash. I tested one to see how it would react to an entire day – it definitely got a bit sunburnt so went back to just a few hours with it outside under a bit of shade. It's much happier.
