  1. Hi Terry, this was my first year using cardboard tubes, I had a very weird thing happen, the tubes got coral spot on them so I had to incinerate them all along with the seedlings. I have only ever seen coral spot on dead wood! Any thoughts from you or your viewers would be very appreciated. Thanks Alan

  2. If memory serves me correctly, it wasn't onions Terry, it was Musselburgh Leeks you trialed May 9th/16. Just a guess, i could be wrong ๐Ÿ˜‰
The power of "free" is just awesome!!
Have a great Easter and don't get Sea sick โ›ด๏ธ๐Ÿซ›๐Ÿ
    Cheers Jason and Colleen ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‘‘๐Ÿ‘

  3. Glad that I saved all those toilet roll holders now. The only thing that I have grown with the rolls are sweet peas, which has always worked but last year (new house by the sea) I had made some troughs to plant up with sweet peas, marigolds and giant sunflowers. All worked apart from the sweet peas, they were maximum 2 feet tall rather than the 6feet. I was told not to plant with the sunflowers, as they deplete the soil from energy and nutrients. Have you heard of this Terry?

  4. Garden mountain zone New Zealand, use toilet rolls for corn, as usually haven't quite have their bed ready, plus we sometimes have a short summer, late frosts then too cold nights in March when they should be harvested.

  5. I use lengths of two metre lengths of guttering (my neighbour is a builder and has let me have some that he would have had to skip, they last for many years and stack to store), with gaffer tape on the ends to keep the compost in but let excess water out, for my peas. Like your boxes these can be suspended. Then once I am ready to plant them out I remove one end of the tape and then shake the strips of peas into shallow trenches I have created with a hoe. I also grow early sugarsnap it seems to avoid the worst of the pea moth, though I have to net them to protect them from pigeons. I support them with my red prunings from my dogwood, it looks amazing and is free! Once they are no longer usable I chip and compost them.

I use toilet roll insides cut in half and placed in old takeaway containers to start my lettuce and brassica seeds off, there are only two of us so I don't need a lot of plants. I find that by the time the plants have their first pair of true leaves the glue has dissolved and I can simply unroll the cardboard making pricking out into modules easy with almost no root damage.

I had been thinking about parsnips and so I will try out kitchen roll tubes noting your advice to plant them out once they have two pairs of leaves, I assume you mean seed leaves plus one pair of true leaves. I have a good sized dibber just right for the job.
Thank you for your ideas, I too like to recycle, compost and reuse as much as I can.

I have a good Bosch chipper and it chips my tomato and bean vines and my brassica stalks along with all my prunings speeding up the composting process. I only put couch grass, brambles and rose prunings in my green bin, I find couch grass and brambles regrow and rose thorns don't decompose!

Where do I get the big blue barrels from?

Thank you again for your ideas๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ˜€. I found you because Malcolm from allotments for food and fun referred to you. (I don't seem to have cannabis fly tippers near me๐Ÿ™.)

  6. Nice one Terry Iโ€™ve used rolls a few times same as you just for beans, Iโ€™ve saved the covid bags also and the test strips and split in half for labels .

  7. Good show Tel, here's Q, have you found a use for short lengths of sink waste pipe? was thinking along the lines of those heavy duty seed module trays that cost a fortune, maybe a heat gun to squeeze the bottoms square, jointing glue to stick em all together, mite be more messin than it's worth lol

  8. Good variety of peas seeds. I am trying some of Bill and Val's peas too.
    Great sharing Terry.
Best gardening wishes Malgosia and Nigel ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ’š

  9. On my second year of the pongo beans u kindly gifted me I sow them the exact Same way thank u Terry

  10. Hi Terry, great video on using toilet rolls for seeds. Lots if advice & info too. Thanks for sharing and take care ๐Ÿ˜Š

  11. I tried my peas in plastic containers but didn't get a single pea. So I chitted my peas in a pot and added them to the soil and they all came up so happy pea lol

  12. I canโ€™t stand thinning out carrots, so I start them in kitchen rolls, but as you say they need planting pretty soon after germination, using the garden auger trick I learned from you. I stand my tubes into 5, 6 and 7 inch plant pots I no longer use. Best wishes

  13. Terry Iโ€™m really new to growing veg and want to plant some parsnips this week could you tell me where the video on how to sow and grow is on your channel. Iโ€™m intrigued to see what you do with yogurt pots in the beginning.

  14. Carrots in toilet roll centres and parsnips in kitchen roll centres,, plant out when 1st true leaves appear!

  15. Hi Terry thank you for the mention the Kent blue and pongo bean have now gone far and wide , we used to use the rolls when we were doing plants for lia and dave allotment saved buying pots.

  16. Growing carrots in containers, I cut the toilet roll tubes into rings about an inch. Then use them as a guide for spacing between carrots after thinning. Them remove them.
I also notice we also like the same ice cream ๐Ÿ˜„ although Carte D'Or where I get it from now sell in cardboard tubs, can't re-purpose, only recycle.

  17. This is possibly the pinnacle of recycling. Almost everything re-used (just the tape) I have so much respect for this video and your efforts, you also share the knowledge so readily. What a lovely bloke you are. Great work Terry thank you.

  18. Happy Easter Terry. The Kent Blue from Bill & Val are a particular fave of mine, been growing them a few years now, taste great and save well. As far as the bog rolls go mate, save them up for home made Christmas Cracker middles, peas grow awesome when direct planted ๐Ÿ™‚ LOL! Have a great one and I'll drop by again soon ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿบ
