  1. What type of holly is behind you to the left of shed? I have several on edge of the woods that line my lot. I’m in the NC Triad and wondering if I can and how to move them to a shady part of my garden so they can be seen? Also have lots of toad trillium I’d like to move into garden if I can.

  2. Thank you for all the information, I've learned so much from your videos.
Question – I potted up some dahlias inside to get them started (zone 5b Iowa). I put them under cheap plant lights and they look terrible. Curling leaves that are dying and feel like limp lettuce. I'm keeping the soil moist. Maybe too moist? Wrong light? I'm at a loss this is the first year I've tried this.

  3. Jim, what is a Chinese Viburnum? No idea here. If you can provide the botanical name, that would help. Love your channel. Long time viewer.

  4. Jim, I am wanting to do a hedgerow for both privacy and a windbreak. I am thinking that it should serve as a food source either for us or birds and insects. I am researching edible hedges but I know shrubs are your thing so I would appreciate any input from you. I am in zone 6.

  5. How should I repair a damaged baby Chinese Fringe tree where a narrow crotch has split? I cut off the weaker branch which was hanging out to one side, but there's still a large split in what will be the trunk. The split goes down about 1.5 inches into a stem that is maybe 3/4 of an inch in diameter. The split is an old one so there is no way to force the 2 halves of the wood together. It's very awkword to cut more deeply to totally remove the split off branch. Will this somehow heal, or do I just need to cut off the whole top of the tree that is split? The half of the crotch that remains is the top of the tree and goes for another 3 to 4 feet. I would really appreciate any advice. The closest I have is from watching Nate The Hoof Guy cut off damaged parts of a cow's hoof.

  6. Thank you very much Jim and Steph for another educational and informative video, I’m a subscriber both of your channels love them both 👍🙏❤️😊👏🏻

  7. Purchased a home last November. Several boxwoods on front (east facing) and side (north facing) foundation appear dead on the backside but leafed out fine on front. Spoke with a neighbor who has a whole foundation planting of boxwoods. Hers are orange and green leaved. She doesn't know what is wrong with hers. I have heard there is a disease attacking boxwoods. Any thoughts on what is wrong with her boxwoods? And, should I give mine time to maybe recover? Is there something I can do for them or just pull them out? I know mine isn't due to the freeze as they looked this way last Fall. (I am in zone 8a on the SE coast of NC).

  8. Watching you and other southern gardeners is about the only thing feeding my spring itch rn. As after some warm days alot of my crocus have poked flowers up but temps are going back down for a week again here, low to mid 20s at night and 40s as the highs, then creeping back up to low to mid 50s as high but man looking ahead spring is going to be cool and wet and drag on for a while 🙁

  9. Hi Jim, for the next Q&A: what advice would you give to a new homeowner? I find your videos so helpful and informative, and I’m excited to have a landscape of my own!

  10. Hello Jim and Steph and Holly. Love your videos especially the question and answer segments. Ok here's my question. I lost a large oak tree in the front yard 3year ago, so prefect opportunity to start a semi large garden. The new garden bed was nourished with compost, leaf mold and mulch. Looked wonderful I was so proud of my beautiful flowers. Well I live in zone 7b. Once the weather became cold I started to have a problem with roaches inside, I have been in this house for 30 years and never had this problem until now. 😢 so I'm going to call pest control. But my question is is it possible this garden is attractive to them? And what can I use in the garden to get rid of them.

  11. Hi Jim. Guess you & I have something in common. I was born left handed but learned to use my right hand instead. So now I’m capable of using both. Also concerning urine smell on boxwoods… never noticed & I have several planted in my yard.

  12. Can you talk about how you modify your irrigation system when you add new plants or revise the layout of your yard?

  13. Pros & cons of growing vines on pergolas? Specifically, Clematis Jackmani (zone 8b). Such plantings look great in photos, but looks ain't everything. What should I be considering?

  14. Do you use moss in your landscape How can I use moss in my landscape Looking to try something different

  15. Question for ya. I saw you got some Soil3. Have these companies figured out the persistent herbicide issue? Curious to hear your thoughts and if you recommend people test their compost/how.

  16. Anyone in southeast Alabama know where to find shredded hardwood mulch in our area? I have looked everywhere in the tri-state area and am at a loss! The mulch I’ve bought at Lowe’s in the past does not stay put when we get heavy rain, and I really don’t want to do pinestraw 😞

  17. Absolutely adore your channel. It has opened up a whole new world of pretty uncomplicated enjoyment of plants for me. But you are driving me crazy… Now, I say this with the greatest of respect and attempted kindness, but it's ambidexTROUS. No i. 😉😊

  18. For the garden tour video that you posted last week (the one with work that you did 30 years ago), how did you make the sidewalk? Specifically, when you lifted the concrete and broke it up, did you have to add/redo the base layer or were you able to just lay the pieces down directly? Thank you!!

  19. Hi Jim, I planted a dwarf peach tree this winter. Since it came out of dormancy it has started sending shoots from below the graft non stop. It has grown some leaves on the top but the growth rate of those suckers is much higher. They grow 4 inch while the leaves on top has barely grown during the same time. I am pinching off those shoots, but is there anything else I can do to take this under control?

  20. Why can’t I find Marvel or Soft Caress mahonia anywhere? Is it just too early for the nurseries to put them out? (OKC, Zone 7a)

  21. Hey Jim, I notice you garden with your dog often, I'm about to start working on the landscaping in our back yard and I'm curious if you adhere to any sort of rules against certain plants deemed toxic, or if it actually is important at all? My dogs occasionally chew on branches and eat grass, but they don't really mess with any of the current live plants in the yard, I'm curious to know what your experience is with this and your dog!

  22. I planted some pancake arborvitae and gold crest cypress last week. A couple of them have some black foliage on them? Should I dig them up and burn them? 😂

  23. I heard you address a question about a neighbor killing weeds with a vinegar concoction. My ultimate goal is to have as little grass as possible, but until then I do want to maintain it. Is there such a thing as selective organic weed killer that won't kill the grass as well? (centipede) Thank you.

  24. Is that a Miss Lemon Abelia behind you?
I'm considering planting 3 to form a small hedge under a tree, how close should I plant them? Is that a good one that can take full sun then transition to part sun as my tree gets bigger? Thanks!

  25. MOST WEEDS ARE GOOD, Good for us to eat, medicinal and good for making g ointments, cures for cancer like Dandylions are good for curing some or most cancers research thizvpjease and please don't use pesticides and weed killers, etc, they are super poisons and will make you sick, give you diseases and cancers, known fact. I have researched this in length for years.

  26. When can I cut back my large rosemary and how far to the ground should I cut it back? When can I cut back my roses, not the vintage, types. THE newer hardy kinds? How far down should I cut them? Thank you. I'm trimming my camellias after they bloom, just the errant branches.

  27. We purchased several Chinese viburnums after watching one of your series. Now they have no blooms in zone 7b. They leafed out after the Arctic Blast, got hit again with a hard frost—did that stunt the blooming process? There’s one bloom at the very base of one, but it’s just covered in neon leaves with burned edges. Should I worry? It’s a two-year-old plant that bloomed profusely last year. Thank you!!

  28. Hi, I have been watching your channels and have learnt a lot from you. Really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I have a question on the electric kitchen composer. Do you think the end product we get from it is the same with what we are doing at the back yard? Does it work the same way and can be use for the garden? It seems like they just dehydrate it? Thank you very much.

  29. We have some Nandinas (Obsession and Gulf Stream) that we're using as foundation shrubs. They are planted a bit over 3' apart, but there is a good deal of space between these newly planted shrubs. Once they get more mature, we expect that much of the spacing to be filled in. But in the interim, is it ever a good idea to plant something temporary to fill in the gaps a bit forward of the Nandinas? Maybe some annuals or tender perennials that can be pulled yearly? Or just mulch over the space?

  30. Hi Jim! Love the channel. I’m in Durham and your videos have been so helpful! My questions are specific to my fenced in back yard with an active pup and many pine trees outside of our fence.

How do I condition clay and sandy soil with a ton of roots? It’s relatively shady and difficult to grow grass. I don’t have much area to work with but considering giving up on growing grass. There’s also a gravel area that gets spread around from my active puppy who also likes to dig. Have you ever dealt with landscaping with active dogs in mind? Any tips would be helpful!

  31. The acidity/smell of vinegar dissipates within a few hours. It has no long term affects in soil or your hardwood floors! Many people don't realize but your housekeepers, many of them ..use vinegar to mop linoleum hardwoods even countertops.. Vinegar is a major attractant of dirt grime etc and dries to no effect.

  32. Hi Jim! I have a question about hellebores. I’m in zone 9A. I have six plants all planted in the same area about a 3 ft.² area so they get the same water shade sun. Over the past two years only one of the plants blooms. The others have never bloomed. I’m wondering if you have any thoughts that you could share on the situation. Thanks so much.

  33. Question for next Q&A: Zone 8a Texas – perennials that I planted last fall (Mexican Bush Sage, New Gold Lantana, Turk’s Cap, holly fern) are coming back, but much smaller than the ones I see for sale at the garden center. Are the garden center specimens coming from a greenhouse, or am I doing something wrong?

  34. Hi, Mr Jim! I have two maple trees off the back deck with exposed roots from erosion. What would be a good way to remedy this? I can’t cut or move the trees. The ground is flat with the exposed roots. TIA!

  35. I have a question about Wax Myrtles. I planted a few in the back of my lot as a native screen. I live in a VERY sandy area in Columbia, SC. The plants are in nearly full sun, but they have became super leggy with very little interior foliage. Dry soil and couple poorly timed freezes haven't helped. Is it ok to cut them all the way back to the ground (or to within several inches)? I think that might be the only option at this point. Plan B is just to replace them. (:
