hi jamie firstly your koi are looking good secondly i think your plans will work the only issue could be with the minus temps we had this year the tempest and shower may become unusable if it gets that bad so would it not be better to put a second hand easy pod before the shower instead of the tempest hope this helps buddy cheers martyn ππ
My first thought is will a single skin of brick be enough? And secondly a purge line…..because I don't see any allowance for draining down the pond, for water changes ect
Jamie just get some blocks to do the back of the new planned pond
I'd probably agree with Martyn and go for an easy pod. As you know I'm a big proponent of upflows and they do definitely work but you need to build some housing for them to protect them from the colder weather. You will also have the problem of them blocking up fairly quickly in the summer months whereas an easy pod might go a bit longer between cleans. You didn't mention any drainage for your waste water. I'd really recommend getting something sorted with that as it's a real pain having to bucket waste water from the filters to whatever drainage you have available. I wish I had of put drainage lines in when I first put my pond in.
Hi Jamie, fish looking well and plans look good but not sure if skimmer is essential (although u say you have lots of trees) π what size pipe work you planning on using?
The tempest is great on a grow on. Mines going well, but (thereβs always a but π) It takes a fair bit of maintenance. Unless going gravity fed the eazypod I dont think will be required. Even a pressure filter b4 would help massively. Catch you soon bud πππΌ
Hi Jamie.
Your koi are looking good for coming through the winter. .
Always lots to plan
I use a easy pod in conjunction with my box filters. It works well for me .for my main pond but am easy pod should be able to do that grow on pond ..
Your bonsai section is looking bang on
Based on my experience of a tempest receiving water before any other mechinical filtration is that larger items of detritus (definitely likely if you have a tree/plant heavy garden) are not consistently flushed away with the normal cleaning function.
The consequence of whihc is that eventually the tempest 'blocks' and you've then got to take it out of the system, take it apart (as much as it allows) and clean it 'manually', which is a massive PITA ;).
My advice would either be to use an easy pod instead, or use a pressure filter (or other mechinical filter) before the tempest. I took the hit and got a pressure filter and it's worked wonders in removing the larger items and allowing the tempest to do it's thing of catching the smaller stuff.
(I know the Tempest manual says it can be used like you suggest, but in reality that might only work if your set up is indoors or you have a plant/tree free garden with 12 ft walls π )
Nice update mate. Not sure whether it would work don't see why it wouldn't. Looking forward to seeing the new pond π
Jamie if you are going to use just bricks for your growing pond in time it probably won't hold I would use concrete blocks for the in side and tie the brick with the blocks
After your bottom drain valve I would put an easy bend and add the skimmer into a swept Tint the horizontal pipe going into the pump, instead of trying to draw them both through a T where you have shown which would tend to have to be an equal T rather than swept, so the water coming together at your proposed T would not be the best flow, I hope you can make heads or tails of what I am trying to sayπ
Iβm rubbish at this but wouldnβt the flow from the bottom drain push its way back through the skimmer? Either way it will look amazing and a perfect spot.
Hi Jamie, plans look great, and I have no doubt they would work. But personally I think its over engineered for the size of it. Which obviously is great if you have deep pocketsβ¦. π·
Sadly (for me) my current pond is not much bigger than your grow-on plans, so all is very similar to mine. As you say, your single skin of brickwork, with fibreglass will be more than adequate. I built mine from a wooden frame of 2βx2β lined with 18mm plywood and then I fibreglassed it. Mine is indoors so I have no need for a skimmer, but with all those tress I understand why you feel the need for it. I agree with others that an eazypod would be ideal for it, but I also couldnβt find any cheap ones at the time so I ordered 2 x 110 litre blue food grade barrels (less than Β£90), and some pipework /connectors etc and made my own. They are the full height of the large 200 litre barrels but are much thinner from a space/foot print point of view. The first one is purely mechanical, and the 2nd one has 30 litres of aerated K1 (a pod holds 18 litres static). I have also used 2β pipework. I know its not the main objective, but the water is always gin clear, and has matured very well now, just 10 months in. Anyways, just my opinion, but only you can decide for yours mate. πππΌ
Nice to c a bit more progress, not sure on single skin ov brick, may b line with sum 18mm ply to spread pressure n soak aways work well Jamie for drainage if u got a few spare milk crates, cheers Terry.
Another cracking vt James!. Personally for what itβs worth, Iβd keep the skimmer and the bottom drain separate. I wonβt go into it on here but will speak to you on messenger. πππ»ππ»
Nice video πΉ Jamie. Hope you're design works out. I always say simple π is best π. Koi are looking lovely π π
You'll of wished you made it bigger. That's definitely not big enough bud.
I'd put the uv straight after the tempest before the t piece.
first of thanks for the mention bud. 2nd i dont see why this wouldnt work. i would of also said no need for skimmer but ,like you say you have loads of trees so can see why you want one. im sure youve thought about it in great depth so im sure this work great
Will be a nice grow on tank , to be honest Id be a bit nervous filling that with a single skin but as you said its been tried and tested , so should be ok .
My tempest was out side this winter with temps down to -7 , I put a jacket on it and its was fine .
Will you have enough bio filtration with the shower ? As its a grow on and you will be feeding large amounts ,
Iβm sure everything will be just fine Jamie a easypod if you can buy a cheap second hand one look forward to seeing it completed πππππ
I'm far from an experienced koi keeper, but looks like it'll work! I wonder if you may need something to do some some mechanical filtration before your pump though. Either way looks like a solid plan!
Hi mate I think it will work but I would consider a eazypod as your filter as the tempest may struggle to cope as the only filter and a separate pump on the skimmer running into the upflow then returning to the pond and to the shower which you can turn off when cold. Stay safe Andy π
Some good advice and feedback from the Guys here for you Jamie. Good Luck with the build π
Loving the bonsai's Jamie ππΌ, I'd probably go eazypod on the new fry pond
Hi jamie i think an easy pod as a tempest is only a water polisher not a filter as sutch ,and an easy pod is cheaper.looking forward to your build m8.what ever you decide im sure it will work.π
I would maybe put the underwater next to the shower for better flow Jamie and I have an easy pod instead of a tempest but thatβs just me.
I would trust a single skin but if I had to I would get some steel bands to wrap round but would then need cladding.
One I can sell you qc tank the same size I run them on 3inc drain to esay pod then put to shower
