Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart โ€“ to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Thanks for a great tour! You didn't mention a place for Sweet corn. Are you not planting that this year?

  2. 4 parallel beds for the cut flower high tunnel, keeps things just a bit different from the other tunnel โค

  3. Most times when you become worried about the background noises, they are actually no problem for your listeners. Loud chickens … wonderful sound on the farm. Walking on gravel … the crunchy noise just sounds like life in the country. Wind … the breath of fresh air. Loud cows … if only we could hear that in our everyday lives. During all those sounds, we can still hear your messages and sounds of the farm are soothing. Don't worry about them.

  4. I vote for cut flowers! A lot less zinnias and other flowers than the small farm. I think it would beautify the garden even more!๐ŸŒน๐Ÿฅ€๐ŸŒบ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿ’ฎ๐Ÿต๏ธ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ

  5. What about Timothy hay made for pet bedding ? My potatoes love it and are doing well. Good job leaving bolted plants for the pollinators. The weather is whacky and it is tricky . Good job

  6. Iโ€™m really looking forward to my gardening season but today weโ€™ve had a snowstorm ๐Ÿ˜‚. Iโ€™ll enjoy your garden while I wait!!

  7. Love how itโ€™s coming together! I think the 4 long rows of cut flowers would be stunning. Can wait to see it.

  8. Your videos and garden tours are very inspiring and helpful. May God bless your 2023 Vegetable, Fruit, Herb and Floral Gardens (Farm animals and fishies/waterfowl too).

  9. I find myself wondering what type and how many varieties of cut flowers you want to grow? Would that factor in to your decision on layout? Having two long rows on the outside and the several shorter rows in between would offer you defined space per flower / variety. Plus, labeling each spot either by plant name or A, B, C….. whatever would make it easier to define direction if other people were helping weed, deadhead, cut……flowers. Also, if flowers have different water / food requirements having the smaller beds in the middle allows some isolation in care. Those are my contributions to your question. I lOVE that you are going to have a flower high tunnel! Look forward to watching. Last year I started upping my flower gardening and will appreciate any wisdom you share along the way. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

  10. If we're voting on the configuration for the High Tunnel Cut Flower Beds, I vote leave them in their current arrangement. #1 -I like it. I find it more pleasing than just long parallel rows. #2 (and More important than what I like) I''m thinking this is still a healing year for those beds and the less the soil is disturbed the better. All the Best!๐Ÿ’•

  11. Leave the beds the way they are this year in the flower tunnel. Just lay down some cardboard and wood chips on top in the walkways. That will give Miah more time to work on other projects and will give you flexibility in future years if you want to rearrange.

For future garden tours, what about if you highlight a different part of the garden on successive days? So Mondays could be both tunnels and orchard. Wednesdays could be raised beds. And Fridays could be animals. Or something like that. That way people could know in advance which days to tune in especially and it would help you stay organized and not have to rush or edit as much.

  12. Hi Jess, I will be watching your videos over and over again. Make both beds, veggies and cut flowers(so you can enjoy both (for you and your family:) ๐Ÿ”Š I'm trying to plant this year's seed's from Last years mishaps. Experiment's are in My Vocabulary! โค๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ€โš˜๏ธ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒบ๐Ÿ’โคUโฃ๏ธ

  13. I think you should have a cut flower garden! You now have plenty of food space. So glad that you mentioned growing herbs that can be used for tea. I have been doing this for a few years and I always think about just how old the herbs in tea bags are because even my dried herbs make a tastier tea. I gave a small class at my property where I talked about herbs for teas and salads and there were so many people that wanted to come back and do it again this year. Make it fun!
