Roots and Refuge Farm: The system is broken. (A rant about real food)

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I love the term "real food."" I'm someone who didn't know what I was actually putting in my body until 3 yrs ago when I started doing a lot of research. I'm a diabetic and I couldn't get my A1C to come down and I had one doctor put me on the keto diet, and it helped some until you are constantly sugar crashing. I have fewer meds now because I eat real food, and nothing is processed with chemicals. I can my own vegetables and feel better now. I agree with you calling it like it is. Don't sugar coat it just to make one person happy. Your way of thinking is very correct about our world is literally killing its own people with the chemicals and preservatives.😢

  2. Jess. Just keep being "real". I appreciate it. There are people in society today who are more concerned with feelings than facts. Some people would rather censor others than accept not everyone feels or thinks the same as them.

  3. I'm currently reading Joel Salatin's book, 'Everything I Want To do Is Illegal' and I highly recommend it. He talks about the restrictions, and some of them really ridiculous, that city, county, state & federal governments put on the average person who wants to grow and process their own food. And heaven forbid you might want to share that food with others. Stand your ground, girl!

  4. I so appreciate your righteous anger about the broken food/medical system in our country, You are making a difference!

  5. First time commenting- I love you a little more today😊 It’s not easy to stand up for ourselves. I grew up in the country, then moved to the city. Then once again being blessed with some land, I migrated back to gardening. Real food is dirty! And healthy! And beautiful! Tomatoes in the store don’t even smell like tomatoes anymore! My goal is to grow real food, to consume real food, feed my children REAL FOOD! Blessing to you, and the following. Just planted my herbs indoors today. 🙌🏽

  6. Hello Jess, been watching your channel for about a year. I have been learning all I can about gardening, plant medicine, microbes in the soil, etc. working my way up to having my own bigger plot of land with gardens & animals. You’re right to call it what it truly is…real food. If someone doesn’t like that, they don’t like it. But there is a HUGE problem with the corporations’ CEO’s & board of directors, & our so called political leaders making bank on toxic food, toxic drinks, toxic products of all types, & pharmaceutical corporations & “health” systems making bank on our illnesses from all the toxins. There is no finding solutions or creating a better choice if we can’t even articulate the problem. I love your videos, & even bought some seeds from MIGardener this year because of you. And yes, hard physical work is required to be responsible for yourself & your family. How is anyone meant to learn, without a way being lit or at least an acknowledgement of a potential new way? Love what you do💗💗 Please don’t change a thing🙏🏼🙏🏼😁 Much love & many thanks

  7. Some people would rather try to control other people's words about their fake food than fuss at the folks selling them the fake food. Thanks for everything you do, Jess!

  8. I went to McDonalds the other day and was told I could NOT order a two hamburger meal but I can order a two cheeseburger meal without cheese! Like since when? So now they charge more and get to keep the cheese the world is getting weirder and weirder 🤦‍♀️

  9. Unfortunately there will always be people who will be offended and will try to change you. There is nothing wrong with your language and opinion. If people don't like it, they can stop watching.

  10. I will not cower to YOUR sensitivities- really sick of this. Real food is real food, not processed. Fake food would not be food at all! UGH 😖

  11. My mum has a book on her shelf called 'foods that harm and foods that heal' or something like that. Real food is food that doesn't harm you. Real food fuels you with nutrients, fibre, protein, fat etc. I think people who are against using the term real food are coming from a place of insecurity and denial. They don't want the wholesomeness of their choices to be questioned. I experienced it when I quit sugar and all of my work colleagues were SO offended that I was choosing not to eat sugar. It was none of their business what I chose to eat or avoid, but they felt like my choice was an attack on their choices.

  12. Amen. Video well done and said. I've always enjoyed your videos but never commented. Thank you so much for creating this very relevant content. Peace ✌.

  13. Jess, you go girl. Every thing you said is correct. I'm glad you are brave enough to stick to principles. There are a lot of us behind you and understand the difference between " right and fake". Love you and your family.❤

  14. You are absolutely correct. I started getting into growing my own food because I have multiple sclerosis and I wanted to take control over what my family and myself put in our bodies. After following Dr. Wahls, a doctor who has MS and went from needing a tilt recline wheelchair to riding a bike with consuming foods that are typically expensive to purchase in most grocery stores. Food. The food of the earth. The processed foods are horrible for people like me (any everyone in general) I’m a full time RN and I know where this disease can lead, and if I can slow down the progression while eating food that nourishes my body, my families body… I will grow the food – knowing exactly what my family and myself are putting in our bodies. Big pharma loves the sick and loves those who consume processed foods and I get it, it’s cheaper in some aspects to feed your family dollar burgers than it is to purchase fresh fruits and veggies in stores for those who cant grow all their food whether it be disability or lack of space (I had a balcony and grew few things). I get it cause I’ve definitely been there. Still there due to different likes and dislikes in my household. I love what you said about community and would love to see that in my area and you actually inspired me to post on my neighborhood FB about having a seed sale. I’ve got a lot of excess that if I can bless someone with a seedling or even a seed knowing they’ll be able to eat something nutritious that makes me smile.

  15. I have to say talking about real food does not offend me however, life expectancy is higher now than ever. Better healthcare for sure, but possibly a better diet and knowledge as well.

  16. Real is real….. if a person doesn't understand the term…. they will have to find their own way to truth…

  17. Oh my goodness! You put my jumbled up thoughts/feelings into reasonable, coherent words!!! Thank you so much for making this video!

  18. I don’t normally comment on videos, but my dear lady I applaud you for educating the public and for your passion. Keep speaking truth.

  19. This is YOUR platform born from YOUR hard work and dirty food! It IS REAL food because it comes out of the ground. Just because some have no access to it ( maybe they'll grow it after watching you) doesnt mean you shouldn't call it real . Truth is truth.
People can see your vision or they can try to tear it down. Their choice! Not your issue!!!

  20. You are right that if we "water down" terms to make everyone happy, then terms end up with no meaning at all. And then no one knows what to believe or fight for and live for. It's all just a dull existence..

  21. Real food comes dirty is my favorite shirt.

Jess never apologize for making the world better. Those who are having a coronary over what you are saying generally feel guilty over what they are doing. People are allowed to have their opinion and we are allowed to disagree.

  22. I love hearing you talk so passionately about things like this. I can hear the emotion in your voice and its beautiful! Thank you SO MUCH for this one !!

  23. Amen Jess! People don't like the truth. They're offended by the truth, for some reason. They want to change language and words to make them feel better so their feelings are hurt. Change can't happen if truth isn't spoken and acknowledged.
