Roots and Refuge Farm: Simple fueling farm food | VLOG

Quiche Recipe (In this video, I skipped using a crust and added potatoes): https://rootsandrefuge.com/an-incredibly-basic-quiche-recipe/

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. It was really nice to see and hear from Jackson.. he is so much like his mom! He really looks like you and his mannerisms are so like you…he's a great young man!😮❤

  2. Beth here …once a week I cook up, in the oven, 2 lbs of pork bacon and 2 lbs of beef bacon. Then I fry 8 burger patties…12 pork sausage links…8 pork patties. So easy to just add done eggs and go this way. And yes, we're carnivore 😉

  3. Some of my favorite dinner plans are those that don't require following a recipe because they are so simple that a recipe isn't necessary.

  4. Love the ideas! Wish I had something other than tulips growing outside lol it’s freezing here! 😂✌🏻🙏🏼❤️

  5. "We just eat simple"…
We didn't even have a whisk in my mom's house until I was 25 yrs old, I didn't hear of pesto until I was older than that and I never heard of a frittata until after I found your channel 3 years ago😅
Simple food for me is that burger patty you had for breakfast or eating fried potatoes w/onion for the 3rd night this week, lol.
I do cook and eat mostly real foods and I am learning to can and preserve but alot of folks would get pretty bored of my cooking 😁

  6. 🌸 thanks Jess ☺
Just what I've been missing with hanging out with a few of my friends who live hours away from us – we just cook most of the time we are visiting… lol… I learn so much from them… However, food is a lot to life and when you have hungry kids coming in from playing…

Heheh…. don't worry my 11 year old boy gives me the 'Cringe Mum' look too when I adjust hair in front of others…
Or from our 2 year old brown tabby cat when I want huggies – a outsretched paw with the same look of 'cringe Mum'….

Grateful that you have let us look in the window of your life today – grounds me again since I've been feeling a bit lost with my parenting (for my kids and relating to my folks) and it does give me a different perspective to keep going. To enjoy life – to inspire my heart and others hearts at the same time…

    Pip 🌸

P.S. this week I found your podcast on google podcasts – enjoying them. thank you for those.

  7. It was cool hearing Jackson's input! Please tell him it was much appreciated! I often have salad with some sort of protein for "breakfast," which for me is around noontime or sometimes even 1 pm. Even though I'm up at 5:30, I don't like to eat in the morning

  8. The meal looks delicious. I love to have breakfast food for dinner as well.
Jackson is turning into a very good-looking young man.
I have 4 kids ( 3 boys and 1 girl). One of my boys got into bodybuilding. In 8th grade, he was wrestling, but the kids called him Little Bit. The following year, all he wanted was weights, so he got a weight set to work out with. His bedroom had a mattress (he did not want a bed in there), a small dresser, and his weight machine. Over the years, we sold the weight machine, and he started to go to the gym. In high school, he was known as the kid with muscles – no more Little Bit. He actually did do some body building competition. Unfortunately, he started having kidney issues in 2017, and last year, he had a kidney transplant. Even through the years, he was doing dialysis, and after the transplant, he continued to go to the gym. I tell him he is my hero with his dedication, and even when things got rough for him, he never gave up.

  9. My 20 year old is lifting weights too… and is always watching what he eats and cooking much of his own food

  10. It doesn't matter how old you get (I'm 38). It's funny when you catch someone toot. Jess giggled and moved right past it.

  11. Throwing out the conventional breakfast foods for foods that fuel me the best has been life-changing. I now focus on protein and fat first carbs last.

  12. The only thing you left out in your definition of "real food" is that Nature intended it(real food appropriate for each species) be eaten in its NATURAL state – (without the use of tools and without seasoning, marinating or cooking to make it palatable) – meaning if we were intended to eat meat, we'd be equipped to kill animals with our hands and teeth as dogs, pigs, cats and others who eat animal products raw in their natural prey state….instead of being revolted by the idea of doing what they do.

If you start your day "with a lot of protein", please do yourself a favor and look up "the dangers of consuming too much protein" which is MORE dangerous than "not enough protein". It turns out we need less than 10% of our calories in protein and the people that don't exceed that and also consume minimal fat (less than 20 percent of calories) are the ones who live until they are 150 years old and never get any chronic or degenerative "diseases" like people are plagued with in the modern world who eat a ton of cooked food, fat and protein. These are of course the Hunzas, Vilcabambans, and Abkhasians and probably others.

  13. Ugh! Nothing like the, “Mom/Hun, what’s for dinner?” Question right when you’re in the thick of something.
Edited: I always wondered why a box of Debbie cakes is cheaper than buying fresh veggies. I don’t get it! Planted out a lot of veggies today. Hoping my gardens will be bountiful, so I can share with neighbors.

  14. My sisters used to tell me they love my cooking and don’t know how to cook. I told them, a lot of cooking well is just knowing what flavors work together. That seemed to help them a lot 🤷🏻‍♀️

  15. Great ideas! Thanks for sharing. I like to prep frittatas as muffins or do a strata with leftover bread ends and then it is simple to pop into the oven the next morning.

  16. I have canned up chicken breast, chicken thighs, ground beef, and pork tenderloin. They are my go to's for quick meals

  17. If people aren’t cooks and they come to you that’s a good thing. No silly questions is what I hear you say. 🤷‍♀️

  18. Thanks for sharing friend Jess , I have to read food labels also my daughter has a food allergy to pineapple and my son has a food allergy to bananas..

  19. Real food from real sources is something I really try to show on my channel ❤ and encourage people to support their local farmers ❤ I love it!

  20. I know exactly what you're saying about foods that wouldn't normally be a breakfast food or a typical dinner food. Our family will eat left over pork chops and roasted veggies for breakfast or eggs and bacon for dinner! The sky's the limit when it comes to nourishing yourselves and your family.

  21. Your exactly right, it’s real food if it comes from the store you have know idea what’s in it, GMO’s, heavy metals, pesticides, and multiple other chemicals. We are so far from the truth, they just don’t know. 😮

  22. I hope you are feeling alright Jess I notice that your eyes are looking kinda red… take care girl…. Watch you every day!!!
