Roots and Refuge Farm: Sometimes Sustainable Foodies (Angry Birds and a Beet Challenge) | VLOG

For the love of food Podcast: https://rootsandrefuge.com/for-the-love-of-food/

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Salt cured Duck egg yolks are creamier and better tasting then Salt cured Chicken egg yolks.

  2. Hey, Jess! I’ve been watching you for years and I love you and your family so much! So I hope you know this is coming from a good place, but I hope you’re taking care of YOU. you look a lot thinner lately and I know you’ve been dealing with health stuff. Just hope you’re not putting yourself on the back burner as we moms can do ❤

  3. After finding out that the USDA will certify a hydroponic operation as organic, I started growing my own food just so I know it's coming from clean organic soil with a real natural microbiome the way we evolved to eat it.

  4. I just watched a video from "Celebrating Appalachia " with Tipper Pressley, where she foraged in her yard for lunch for her and her daughter. Amazing what we can find if we just know what to look for.

  5. Sweet Jess.. Your "For the Love of Food" Podcast is incredible and moving, as is your two passionate books you have put your heart & soul into!! I've listened to your podcasts often and this one several times! Thanks for your caring & sharing of your homesteading & family's journey! Your honesty is valuable when you wear it on your sleeve!
Love you and your family and how you have inspired me with my own passions! Blessings Always ❤️ 🙌 🌱🌷🦆🐮👩‍🌾🌻🙏

  6. For those that don't know, you can eat the beet greens and stems. They are quite good.

  7. Wouldn't it be more natural to feed your dairy cows grass? Also is the grain they are fed NON-GMO?

This is very interesting! So are all dairy cow fed grain? Does this mean the most expensive cheeses one buys are made from cow's milk (fed grain) that wasn't even produced as Nature would have intended?

  8. This is the first video I have watched that , although briefly, Jeremiah had his hair down . Looks good.

  9. you can just use the older geese and ducks grind the meat for burger. I do it all the time when hatching chicks and roos to pullets is crazy. Who doesn't love ground burger much better then trying to toast it and being tough.

  10. I remember my first class Riverbanks zoo trip. That is work! And I decided my kids would not go to the zoo without me on that trip for sure. I was always a chaperone for that one. Too many ways for a kid to get lost or stolen for me.

  11. You and I disagree. I do not believe that animals were put here for us to slaughter and eat. I do not know how you can do this when trying to be Christ like. I just can’t picture Jesus doing this. Think about it for a minute, open your heart. Love them, don’t kill them please

  12. Hola – can you provide updates on your dad/his move to the property (if that's still the plan), the start of Miah's Barn/workshop, and plans for your house? Between your health scare and the new businesses, it's easy to understand the timing wasn't right but was just curious about how things were evolving on those fronts…

  13. Miah I saw right through that challenge. I knew you were getting your girl riled up to benefit you. 😂

  14. I'm glad to hear your thoughts on ducks. The eggs are amazing but they are filthy animals.
