I Need Your Opinion: What Color Would You Choose?

I need some opinions. The window box is almost finished and needs to be stained either black to match the door or gray to match the trim. What would you choose? I’m leaning one way, but would also appreciate your input! #cottageonthehill #cottagegarden #cottagestyle #gardenlife

  1. Unless you're planning to install a window box under the window on the opposite side, I would use the gray paint. The black, might make everything lopsided as it would create more visual weight on one side.

  2. Just a thought, 2 small window boxers on either side fake side door to match front. Back yard gate in black gloss with arched shape and round window portal shape to mimic front door. 😊

  3. Love watching your garden transformation. My vote is for the gray trim for the window box. It will blend in with the house. That way, your plants and front door will pop. I'm so happy to hear you are going to remove the screen door on the side of your home. It will look great. I am enjoying following along. Thank you for being so willing to share your home. You give me lots of inspiration.

  4. I would definitely go black. If your keeping your front door black, it would add balance. With a black window box your plants won’t look like they are floating above something non rescript. A black window box will add drama. When I recommended a fountain for the east side I forgot about the wind that you get. I still like the idea of a fountain if you can find a style that would work. Maybe one with a curved wall back to block some of the wind.

  5. I noticed a comment below that expressed my concerns too. Your patio is too narrow. A good size person , when pushing out the chairs to enter or exit, will hit the boxwood hedge /row. You need more space. We have created many decks and patios in all our home's landscapes.and always added more sq footage than we originally planned. We were never ever sorry! If you want a bigger table and comfortable seating, add it to the front area of the patio. There seem to be flag stones and bricks still on site. Love the hardscape materials!

  6. Should the window box color be whatever the chair color is not. In other words, do you want the box and the chairs in front of the box to have high contrast?

  7. Depends if you want it to stand out! If you want it noticed more I think Black or Blue Gray to blend in more! I personally think black!

  8. While I think the black would really pop, I also think you might consider whether the black will absorb heat and require more watering. Am enjoying your process!

  9. I would definitely do black. It is an accessory not a part of the structure of the house and you want it to accentuate the plants not the container. The plants in the ground will show better as well. Imo

  10. I would do the window box in gray. I would also paint the door in a matte black or matte dark charcoal. You could also use both colors on the window box doing most of it in the gray with edges in black. But I would definitely switch the black to matte instead of shiny. So much fun!

  11. I wouldn't pick either of the colors you suggested for the window boxes. I feel maybe a little color would work. Farrow & Ball has a lot of great colors that look wonderful in the garden. I'm thinking something like Inchyra Blue or Selvedge. 🙂

  12. A thought from your tree stump vases. If you are handy hollowing those out, what about making a lamp out of one of those – a narrower one, perhaps.

  13. I like the idea of painting your window box black to make your plantings pop and to match the front door.

  14. Black for sure….I like the idea of it being an accent color, not trying to be "part" of the window. Also, Black with boxwoods is pure magic!

  15. I like the idea of window box matching the window trim. Nice backyard, love all clay pots! It would be fun to carve out space for potting area, showcasing the clay pots.

  16. To make things cohesive I would like to see the color that matches your window trim. Let your plantings be the pop of color you want. It would also match some what to your slate in the patio.

  17. I would say glossy black …then you would have three black accents. If you decide you don’t like it you can always paint it gray. Probably won’t stand out that much with the beautiful plantings you will place in it. So excited to see the finished the front yard in its glory! 😊

  18. LINDA EVERYTHING IS LOOKING RIGHT, WONDERFUL JOB. THE TOPIARIES ARE SO BEAUTIFUL AND WAITING FOR
    THE NEW PLACE.

  19. Black, I believe would balance out the other black features… whatever you do will look fabulous I know. It's been a pleasure to watch the progress. Very inspiring.
