Roots and Refuge Farm: I hate killing seedlings. (This Vlog is Full of Gardening Tips)

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I’m NJ 6a and Dahlia’s don’t do well here. I’ve tried containers, in ground – nothing comes up. I plant my seedlings the same way you do, but save all the ‘extra’ plants to give away if I can’t find space. This year I’m planting tomatoes in buckets besides the garden because it allows for added space I don’t have beds but can grow produce. A relative gardener said I won’t get much yield, but I’ve done it in the past with great success. I know you love experiments and have plenty of space – would you consider trying to grow one tomato plant in a bucket for your followers?😊

  2. What’s the name of that tool that you used to plant the dahlia bulbs? I’ve never seen a tool like that before.

  3. Can't you use the leaves in soups? I do that when I have a lot of eaves. Delish with other vegetables.
And just saw a solar fountain to place in a bird bath!

  4. I just told my husband Sunday that nothing I planted on the 20th has sprouted. Monday morning I went out to milk came back in side got my share holder their milk and happen to look at the yellow tomato I planted they all where up or just comeing out of the soil. I had the biggest smile on my face. Just wanting for the rest and I keep adding stuff. I'm not planting till May. So I got lots of time. Waiting for my green house to ship and get here. Thank you for always posting great content. God bless

  5. Back in Victorian England, they used to grow radish seed pod to put in salads. We have tried it and it adds great flavor and visitor have no idea what they are.

  6. Had some tomato seeds from 2010 (after crash) and thought hope 1 sprouts. Planted 12 in a red cup. All 12 came up, sigh. Will use 4 (have lots of other varieties). I understand.

  7. I have a little table and chairs like that. Mine are black and the table top is a woven brown rattan. I was wanting to put the set out on my porch but I keep it inside so the rattan doesn’t rot from the weather. I bet yours would look good in the healthy high tunnel or wherever you’re having to squat in front of the camera. So smart to just overseed a small percentage of pots. If germination rate is 90%, in theory, all you really need to overseed would be 10%. Great episode Jess! I’d love to learn more about stratification…like which ones do we need to put in the refrigerator and for how long. I know cherries need a long time to stratify, probably apples too. What about brassicas that I have a hard time growing in the south? Other fruit, vegetables, herbs or flowers? My Dad use to keep many seeds in the fridge or even some in the freezer. Bird bath by the bathtub and/or the bed frame? Maybe make a cute little trio?

  8. Watch for old tips from old people. Yes, strawberry flowers with a black centres won't make a fruit, due to being frosted.

  9. You're artichokes makes me so happy. I'm growing them for the 1st time this year. I started thm in January under grow lights. 😊

  10. Hey Jess, you were asking for suggestions. I think I would save the birdbath for the house. In the meantime you can move to your home now. The kids table and chairs, I would put by the kids treehouse. They can use it for snacks, idea building, and visiting. Enjoyed seeing everything coming to life.mi absolutely love that you’re not a seeed or bulb snob. 👩‍🌾💚🥬

  11. How do you remember where everything is planted ???? I love watching your garden journey 😊

  12. 🌸 bird bath location – perhaps away from the human use area in a newly created bird garden perhaps?

My 2 cents worth so you could have bird feeders hanging / installed in such garden and your bird bath as the centre piece…

My reasoning behind that suggestion is to not feed or have birds gather on mass, to poop all over your seating and beautiful black structures…

We feed our wild street birds on the driveway (our car is in the garage) the driveway is on the opposite side side of the house from the clothes line ( New Zealand – most backyards have the rotary clotheslines)
Feed the birds or have bird structures away from stuff you don't want poop all over.

    🌸 Pip

  13. This is why I came up with 283 tomato plants this year. The extras are going to family, friends, and over 100 to a food giveaway for Soldiers Angels. Hopefully I can pass most of them on.

  14. On the dahlia’s… i live in the netherlands (europe) out estamated last frost date is may 15th. We don’t get much frost, but it will get down to 14°F (-10°C). I have always left my dahlia bulbs in the ground 😬 they always survive. I think this only applies to sandy soil? Clay will be wetter and probably kill your dahlia’s… but know that the can withstand a little frost (as bulbs!!) if they are in a bit dryer soil 🙂

  15. I so feel your pain when thinning. I'm curious about pinching the top off pepper plant seedlings. When do you and how do you go about doing that?

  16. Please continue to film the potage garden . I never get tired of walking through the area with you.

  17. I don't like wasting food, so to me thinning seedlings is wasting food. I absolutely love your garden, I would love to come visit someday.

  18. I have limited space, and no friends who garden. I just up potted and had to say goodbye to tomatoe and basil seedlings. It's very hard. Unless you garden, you can't understand the feeling. I think everyone here gets it. 😢
