NEW Vegetable Garden! It’s time to get GROWING!

It’s time for us to get GROWING in our new Vegetable Garden!
We filled our VEGEGA raised garden beds with a mixture of Terra Preta, compost, sheep & horse manure and we planted up some plug plants and seeds.

To start with we planted two different types of Tomato’s, Beetroot, Ruccula, Carrots and red and brown Onions. We also planted our Avocado tree into the ground. Its been in a pot for the last 3 years and was desperate to get its roots into the ground.

Our greenhouse was looking a bit tatty so it got a new cover and Gina worked her magic weeding and tilling it all ready for some planting.

This week we also sow all of the grass seeds and sort out some irrigation so that we can grow a lush lawn for us to lay on in the spring and summer months.

We had a lot of fun making this episode and we really hope that you enjoy it 🙂

We are Ken & Gina. In 2019 we weren’t happy with the way things were going for us, so before Brexit, we sold our home and most of our our belongings, and drove to Portugal in our motorhome Bob.

We bought an old sheep and olive farm in Castelo Branco, Central Portugal, where we live the good life with our beautiful animals. Back in 2019, we could not find any videos on living in Portugal, so we started this channel, documenting our move from the city life to the farm life, and buying a farm.

  3. Hi Ken and Gina. Great video. You asked about avocados. When I was a young pup, I lived in the "Avocado Capital of the World" in southern California. First thing to know is that avocado trees do not have a tap root per say. Instead, they have many roots that spread out close to the surface of the ground to capture what little rainfall there could be on a dry climate. When you pulled the clay pot, you could see the root structure. Just be sensitive to future root directions and depth. You may want to also look into the type of avocado to determine if it is an A or B tree. Avocados will flower with the female flowers in the morning, with the flowers opening as male the following day (Type A). Type B is the opposite. In essence, fruiting will depend on the temperature tolerance, and if your tree came from a nursery with a climate similar to yours. These trees are self pollinating, IF the weather is just right. When the avocado craze was at its peak in California, people were planting avocados on hillsides far too steep for good cultivation, let alone harvesting. At one of the industry conferences, it was a suggested that monkeys be used to climb the trees and pick the avocados (fortunately that suggestion didn't last more than a few months.) We also left the leaves on the ground, as raking them up exposed the roots to too much temperature and water variation. Finally, and this was a local issue, we carried a gun with us because the rattlesnakes loved to live in the leaves. So with that said, good luck with your tree, and hopefully the fruit. BTW, I too love the sound of the impact sprinklers. It brings back many memories.

  4. Hi Ken ang Gina ,
Filling the beds with branches and wood isn't to save money , it's a planting technique called Hugul kultur and it's really good at creating a continuous level of feed for your plants as the wood and twigs break down.
Cucumbers and tomatoes etc thrive using this system … some "food" for future thoughts… cheers

  5. Great VLOG Ken /Gina .good to see you getting your hands grubby. How about runner beans in you round container up a trellis with carrots under neath & marigolds flowers to keep pests away . Two crops in one container & great flowers to Britten it up. Keep up the good work / lifestyle balance perfect with your farmer neighbor. Looking forward to more relaxing veiwing ,from North Devon .☮️❤️👨🏻‍🌾🐑🥃🥃

  6. Those planters are going to keep settling because you didn’t compact as you filled. Use a sledge hammer with handle upside down to poke down as deep as you can then use sledge head to pack the top. Anything you plant before will settle 150-300 mm.Good luck Roy.

  7. Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys. nice to see you in your New garden.

  8. Well done to you both the garden is going to be amazing , hard work especially with (Man flu Ken 😅) 👍

  9. i had several raised bed gardens maintained by honor farm inmates , root crops and salsa veggies were by far the favorites. good luck

  10. miristeming plants do not produce tap roots. it a method of making a producing tree from a producing limb of a mature plant or tree. your avocado was more than likely grown this way. grown from a seed the tree would have a tap root. my2cents ps I have done many figs using the miristem process and it works well

  11. Looks great. I believe those raised beds would be called veg, as in vegetables, and gah. So, veggie gah.

  12. Hello Ken
You mentioned a very reputable real estate agent in your area, and I would like to have his contact information as your time permits. thank you, Eric

  13. Hey Ken , have come to a recent discovery about your videos! Dude , you need to get a Portuguese beer sponsor ! My beer consumption has gone up dramatically since watching your videos. I am left craving an ice cold beer , more than I would care , lol

  14. Hello, Ken and Gina
I'm sure that someone has probably told you already. Check on whether you need to have two avo trees in order to get fruit. That's my understanding.
You're going to have such a lovely oasis. ❤

  15. Serious question. I'm torn on where to start looking for a farm in Portugal. I'm an American thinking of relocating, I also have citizenship in Luxembourg.

Now, if memory serves me correctly think you chosen the middle of country on the eastern side to buy a farm. Why did you choose that location? Real estate is likely cheaper there? But also less moisture, and hotter, harder to keep plants alive? Compared to Minnesota in the U.S, your soil looks light. Is it better to buy in another location as far as better soil and moisture? Coming from Minnesota your "cold" does not bother me.

I love to garden, forage, plant trees, little live stock, etc.

If anyone has insight it would be greatly appreciated. P.S, I have not watch all the videos. This knowledge is likely contained in them but I haven't the time currently to binge watch haha.
