  1. Any advise for my pink flowering Japanese Cherry Trees (2). We have terrible Japanese beetles each year. We've sprayed them and used those bug bags and they get so full and smell terrible when we dispose of them. Nothing really helps they eat them up. Love your channel watch all the time.

  2. Hey Jim – I live in Central Coastal California, zone 9b. New home construction on sandy some what compacted soil. While recently planting a new Japanese Maple, I ran into a scattered, intermittent layer, about a foot down, of bluish black material with a rotting smell. The area around our housing community is farmland, so I am assuming there is old vegetation that was maybe filled over. I should also mention we have had a lot of rain recently, abnormal for this area. My question(s) are, am I dealing with anaerobic soil, is this a major issue for new plantings, and if so is there any (cheap) way of remediating? The area I am hoping to plant is approximately 4,000 sq. ft. Thanks for any guidance.

  3. Great video as always! You really made me laugh when you were talking about coyotes gathering In tree lines. 😂😂😂

  4. We have coyotes in the Northeast that run thru woods, cemeteries and yards. I am outside of Boston, MA.

  5. Hi Jim! Can I see your Chinese snowball viburnum? I’m in Chapel Hill 7b. Very close to you. I bought one online in dormancy, but it’s still not sprouting. I wondered whether it has been dead when delivered. It looks exactly like it when delivered. But the branches do not look dry. Thank you.

  6. Hi Jim. Always nice to see Holly in the background 😊 Q: I always get confused which hydrangeas should be covered from late frost. Is it just the macrophyla & oakleaf bcz they bloom on old wood & Not the panicle, smooth or mountain hydrangeas because they bloom on new wood correct?

  7. Hi Jim
Could you do a list of perennials that will stay upright on their own without staking? And those that won’t flop if they are given a “Chelsea Chop”.
    Thank you from 🇨🇦zone 8

  8. Hi Jim, could you talk about how you use compost in your garden? I know that you don’t pull mulch back to apply organic fertilizer. Do you treat compost the same way? Do you add compost to both new plantings and established plants?

  9. Tip for frustrated newbies waiting for plants to grow: Take before and after pictures. Sometimes it only seems like stuff isn't growing. When I start feeling impatient with my landscape I go back through photos from the past seasons. I'm always amazed, and it squelches my urge to use synthetic fertilizer. Gardening like this is a hobby that teaches patience through delayed gratification. The rewards are worth it.

  10. When new shrubs from the big box stores have a small mesh bag enclosing the roots, what do I do with that bag? Leave it? Remove it completely? Cut it but leave it in place? Thank you for always providing both a general "just cut it in half and toss it back in" AND an "over-wordy and over-complicated" description of things! I really love your style!!

  11. If you could only buy 1 bush for the landscape what would it be? 7 b Leeds Alabama (20% off coupon for 1 plant 😂)

  12. Is there anything that will grow within five feet of the understory to a full size oak tree. Something evergreen that will get tall?

  13. New construction home and they installed a culvert to control water flow in my front yard along the roadside. I am looking for inspiration on ways to landscape it. There is only standing water right after a rain, so I wouldn't consider it boggy. Zone 9a, coastal Georgia, sandy soil. Thanks for sharing your expertise a love of horticulture.

  14. Hi Jim! My question is how far apart would you recommend planting moon dance hydrangeas? I want to plant them in a compact row. Thank you 😊

  15. The repeated freezes have damaged the leaves on my hydrangeas (blue round blooms) leaving the new leaves at the base of the plant wilted and dark. I see no new growth yet along the branches. How should I prune those dead leaves out?

  16. Weed barrier is a petroleum product and will leech into your soil and affect your trees, shrubs and plants. Use newspaper and cardboard as a weed barrier. I've had a curb garden (area between the street and sidewalk) for over 20 years that went for over 15 years with NO WEEDS. Even now, over 20 or more years later, I still only get a few little weeds in the spring.

  17. I just noticed that my gaura is coming back but the leaves seem to have red spots on them. Any idea what that might be? I know my fiddle leaf fig inside can get that with watering issue. I think it’s edema. Could this be the same type of thing or is it a fungal issue?

  18. Hi Jim, always enjoy watching these every week. I also have a question this time! My neighbor uses vinegar against weeds etc. I think my plant next to the fence died because of that. What should I plant there instead to improve the soil? Are there plants that can handle the vinegar? Thanks un advance!

  19. Jim! I love your videos! They have been so much help to a beginner gardener! I have a question – my proven winners sprinter boxwoods smelled like cat urine last summer/fall and I am traumatized by the smell since it by my front door. Do all boxwoods smell like cat urine? Should I just replace it with holly or another type of evergreen?!? Thank you so much!!!!!!

  20. Lol, if Game of Thrones was filmed on an arsenic rock and you threw in the Nature Channel-that's the Thumb in Michigan! I moved from the city to a very rural area and I'm afraid to go outside after dark👀😂 I love Winterberry Holy and Fothergilla as ideas to replace the height and space of the area, about 3500 sq feet! I wasn't looking forward to the project, until I started to look for replacements. I might need to go take a class on native plants, this is fun!
