  1. Looks great Erin! I’m so glad you found the wire cutters because that was getting toasty there for a bit. 🙂
My best friend in FL has a Staghorn fern the size of a VW bug that she just stuck between two huge branches of an Oak tree, and a smaller (I’m using that term loosely lol) one that is just stuck onto her other Oak. Total shade and they only get watered in the Summer if there’s no rain, which would be highly unusual. They thrive in that shady, humid environment and are just stunning. Give yours full shade, humidity, an occasional drink and you will need a construction crane the next time you have to pot it. As for the moss – I mulch a lot of planters with shredded coconut coir and spaghnum will work perfectly well too. Thanks for sharing; that was fun to see.

  2. I just visited The Fairchild Botanical Garden in Coral Gables, FLA. Massive staghorn ferns hanging from huge chains. My friends that I was visiting had them on their palms and I love them, even though I know I could never grow them in NYS-Zone 6b. Never thought I could grow as a house plant. Good to know if I was ever inspired to do that, but I usually kill house plants, so not sure I could take the guilt with a majestic staghorn.

  3. Amazing Staghorn. I’d say you’re doing fantastic in the house plant department.

  4. I have onr that seems to live on benign neglect, too. I never thought to let it camp out on the covered porch over summer… planning its summer camp experience now!

  5. I’ve had mine for several years and it’s been declining this past year. Now I know why. I feel less guilty in pitching it now. THANK YOU

  6. I just bought one of these lovelies from my local nursery. My grandmother lives in Daytona Beach and has had one growing for decades. IT'S MASSIVE. I'm in the frozen north though, so indoors for me.

It's in the same type of container, but in a South facing window. When you water, are you moistening the fronds at all? Or just the base? My plant seems to want more water than 1x every other week.

  7. Good Lord Girl- YOU are hysterical!! Glad to see you used nippers instead of the grinding tool, to free that crazy looking plant. I'm sure with your creativity you'll find lots of uses for the remaining moss. Your container seems a tad small for the plant, unless you break it into two plants.

  8. Love this! Please consider using some rope or something rustic instead of those wire hangers! I love the fern. And the basket. I have a couple small ones and would love to see them this size! Not real sure how to take care of them but I guess they’re tough because I have had them for a year now. Thank you for sharing!

  9. Thanks! I always wondered how else you could hang a Staghorn Fern other than on a piece of wood. It looks great!

  10. Thank you for sharing your stag horn plant. It is so unusual and it is the first time I have ever seen one! Where is its origin? I've never seen one growing in zone 4 WI. I always keep my eyes open for plants that grow in the wild and wonder what the heck is this!!!

  11. I bought a small stag horn while we’ve wintered in Florida. It’s been happily growing on my humid lanai, and I have a real fear of how it’ll do in very dry Colorado. Your video was very timely.

  12. That is definitely a lot of moss! I use it as part of the mix in my orchid pots. Do you know anyone who grows orchids? They would have to have a lot of orchids!😅
Your staghorn fern looks very happy in its new basket.

  13. Off topic, sorry Erin, but would you mind sharing the specs on your wall tile? Just exactly what we need for a small kitchen needing more light. Love learning about vanda baskets too and may screw up the courage to re-pot my staghorn.

  14. I have always admired staghorn ferns, but I kill every houseplant so I try to to commit murder of innocent plants. 😀 yours is beautiful and kudos for keeping it going this long, may it have many more years to thrive.

  15. And this is why we tune into you. 😂💚 Beautiful inspiration, good information and lots of laughs. I’ve always loved those plants! Curious to know about the other houseplant that captured your heart…

  16. Great video! I shared this with our son who lives in FL. He became a stag horn fern Daddy in January. 😆
