The Tree Tomato (Tamarillo) – A wonderful fruiting container plant!

In this video, Logee’s horticulturist and third generation owner, Byron Martin, talks about the Tree Tomato plant. Also known as the Tamarillo, this small, fast-growing tree or shrub is native to the Andes Mountains in South America. Tree Tomato produces edible, egg-shaped fruit reminiscent of plum tomatoes that tastes like custardy guava. Considered a delicacy in South America, the sweet, tangy fruit have a firm texture and can be eaten raw, cooked, or used in jellies, sauces, and desserts. The fruit holds well, and can be harvested from late summer into the winter. With its large, heart-shaped dark green and glossy leaves, the Tree Tomato plant is easy-to-grow and will start producing fruit very quickly if given full sun.
