Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

The homemade vanilla is SOOOOOOOO yummy! I have been making my own for about 5 years and will never go back……..EVER! Makes great gifts too.
Glad you didn't lose any seedlings. I am good at batch cooking lunches and teas but haven't attempted breakfast yet. Taking this video as a sign.
BTW your hair is looking lovely just now! Very jealous
Do you ever have issues with your jars exploding when you pressure can chicken broth? I tried for the first time and the lids flew up and off the tops of the jars even after the canner sat for 1hr to cool down. The next time, only half the jars seals because again the lids came off. Any tips? I would love to have a successful batch and not have to freeze the jars.
Rachel Wesson kindle unlimited books only are brill….. Orphan train and Mail Order Brides books, on how they left Ireland to escape the famine and become homesteaders , the Historical Fiction is outstanding, if you get the time to sit and read. ☘Hello from Ireland and ☘☘☘Happy Paddys Day!!!!☘☘☘
Hey Jess, I came across one of your first videos titled " Our budgeted Garden … you have been really blessed and many of the things you dreamed or wanted have come to pass! God bless and I look forward to your next video 💜😊
In Montana we have plenty of "longing" this time of year. At least the onion starts are lush under the lights 🙂
I’ve been loving Kristin Hannah lately! I love that so many of her characters are gardener’s. I haven’t read The Nightingale yet, but it’s on my list.
I have read The Nightingale it was a very good book!
Egg bites are a quick breakfast favourite here. Fresh eggs, cottage cheese, spices/veggies of your choice (chives, spinach, onion, peppers are our favourites). Mix and spoon into muffin tuns, top with shredded cheese and cook in the oven. Store in fridge
It's almost the end of summer here, Queensland Australia…. and we had a week or two of false autumn… now back to blitzing heat and humidity..😂
i hear you loud and clear, Jess… summer is our resting time here, the humidity and bug load is atrocious, and the only hope of growing inground any leafy green is under low tunnel bug exclusion netting.
I got excited, planted 120 garlic bulbs, racked up my seedling trays and planted out all my tomatoes, capsicums, chillies, lettuces and seeded up my winter broccolis, cauliflowers and cabbages…
i have to keep my seed trays in the coolest part of my covered deck, with filtered sunlight for a couple more weeks and play the 'don't get too leggy' dance with light versus heat 😂
My goose is telling me the seasons are changing, same as my chooks… goose is getting broody, the chickens are starting to moult, now if only the sun and humidity would agree, it would be hustle time. 🤷♀️
My 6 year old daughter came in while I was watching your latest episode. She calls you and a couple of of my other channels my friends. She asked me today how I got your phone number? She didnt understand YouTube…lol. As our conversation continued she asked if I met you in person. I told her no but I am gonna meet you one day. I told her it is 3 hours away. She said that is closer than the beach! So someday soon…we need to take a little Road trip!
I bet your heart sank when you thought it froze all your plants. I made carrot apple muffins with walnuts for breakfast today. We finished the cranberry orange muffins yesterday. I like the portion control and ease of having them ready to go too. I double my vanilla too. Spring is playing with everyone this year. I am planting tomatoes inside this week. I will be giving some to my neighbors. I am still waiting for spring to come. I bless you as well.
How many vanilla beans per quart? Or do you do 1/2 gallon? I’ve never done it but I bought some vanilla beans from Costco and was surprised how much they cost.
The Nightingale is one of my all time favorite books!❤
I like to make vanilla in rum. 😋 yum
Amen!!!
I also love WWII books! My favorite is All The Light We Cannot See
For those of us who observe the Lenten season, it is such a blessing to be able to reflect on the thoughts of longing during this time. For Lent breaks at Easter, when we celebrate the resurrection of our Savior. This season of false spring can help us to be rooted in the Word and to know that our desires for the longing of our physical gardens are nothing compared to the Longing for Jesus' return one day. The garden we ultimately yearn for is the one planted by the Lord Himself.
I love the idea of batch cooking muffins and would also appreciate directions on how you do sheet pan bacon, too.
As always, you're a blessing, Jess❤
All those years ago in Arkansas when you first explained “turning your waiting room into your classroom,” I diligently wrote it down and it is displayed up by my window that looks down on my 1/16 acre, and my garden in pots and a sandbox outback. And I long for acres and acres to have animals and a huge garden, etc etc. And I’ve been bitter in this classroom. And mad that I’ve had to wait. And blaming everything and anything that has prevented my dream. But your sentiments today about longing and how it is a gift has stopped me in my tracks. Thank you for helping me look at my waiting room in a different fashion.
Do you individually wrap the muffins when freezing?
You are my hero. You are such a romantic about life, keep up the great work!!
