How To Start Vegetable Seeds – The Definitive Guide For Beginners

Start Your Vegetable Seeds Indoor Early To Get A Jump Start On Spring! In temperate climates, the growing season is often just not long enough to get the most out of your tomato, peppers, cucumber, or other warm weather crops. For the plants to flower, fruit, and produce for you, they need a specific amount of warm days to reach maturity to be able to give us the veggies we so love.

So gardeners like you and I start our seeds early indoors to hit the ground running in the spring with transplants that are already 2+ months old! Easy stuff! In the previous video I showed you the tools and items you’ll need to successfully start your seeds indoors: (https://youtu.be/9frbNGcizjc). In this video, let’s dive deeper and see what it takes to really get that good batch of early plants so that your summer garden is the best it possibly can be!

  1. Gurneys Seed are my favorite,Kandy Korn what the only corn I'll ever plant.
Also great teacher you are Sir

  2. Congrats for offering us so much value.
I just tested the viability of the seeds in wet paper towel. About 80% of seeds sprouted
It remains to start growing lettuce from seed in seedling tray.
What would be the recommendation for the sprouts we end up with from testing the seed viability?
Would it be appropriate to use these sprouts in the seedling tray?

  3. Getting excited about the new growing season! Going back to all your videos from last year for planning purposes! Happy new year and hope you and your family including that sweet pup are keeping healthy and safe!

  4. Oh my goodness, this video is so helpful! I am not even halfway through and I feel so much better about all the questions I have had for years about gardening but was so overwhelmed about finding all the answers. Thank you so much!

  5. u mentioned after seeds sprout in app. a week, will need light…do they not need light before then? Thx, great video

  6. I've planted flowers before, but that's it. I've done gardens with my mom when I was younger but never fully by myself….this year I discovered while planting some.flower bulbs that my backyard has some wonderful soil quality! So I have a bunch of seed I purchased, as well as was gifted ! The store right next to me has these seed starting things, and it just seems the universe has aligned for me to hopefully finally have a successful garden to call my own 😅

  7. My house is in the 90s. I have to turn a fan on or the cooler or I can get dehydrated super fast and my blood pressure gets very low not a good feeling btw and super dizzy. But I moved them to a warmer place in the house. The issue I'm having is there limp and often dying. Now I tried miracle grow yellow bag forgot the name for the first time and either some grew then grow limp and die or do not even sprout. I normally use moisture control and have been successful but things have been very difficult the last few months financially and emotionally that I went cheaper. I don't know what they put in that soil maybe to many big wood chips but that's the worse soil Iv ever bought. Iv tried sunlight thinking ok maybe inside wasn't good enough and nothing. To me it seemed like the soil was the issue I don't or try not to overwater if I do I pore the excess out.

I finally got fed up with it and have a half of bag left I'll just use as hole fillers as we get alot of gophers in the country. I went and bought the moisture control 3 bags worth as it's funny bought 3 1 cu feet is cheaper then the single 2 cu ft at walmart makes no sense. Anyways planted some well older seeds plus newer one. I just wanted to experiment with the old ones and see if they grow so I'll see how it goes if the older ones don't then o well no biggie.

Then I have a issue that Iv never came across or even heard about. When I buy green onions I put it in water and transfer later. They have grown huge btw but they have this thick clear gooey stuff inside. Cut the first one as I bought that way before nothing the first two times then when the others had that issue I just checked it and it to had it. If anyone can help me understand what that is. Iv looked online and haven't found the answer or even a post about it. I'm thinking of just tossing them which is a shame but I'm also not going to eat it either without knowing what it is.

  8. So, I had no clue what I was doing and planted a bunch of seeds in peat pots (little ones, like your trays), but they can't be watered from the bottom, and it's only warm in the room they're in for 8-10 hours of the day, and somewhat cool the rest of the time. It's been 4 days and our pumpkin seeds are sprouting, but so far I don't see anything else, and I'm not sure how often I'm supposed to be watering them since I can't just put water under them once. Have I already messed this up and how often should I spray the soil with water? I've been doing it just whenever the soil starts to look dry. (And I'm in Florida, the seed packets all seemed to indicate that I could start the plants I picked between June and September?)

  9. Wow very informative. Thanks for sharing this video. I watch this video because I bought some seeds a eef tomato and peperone cayenna just to try planting. New subs here. 👍

  10. Another of your great lessons! Question, after germination under a plastic humidity dome, when should the dome come off and seedlings be set under lights? Here in Paso Robles, CA it was 30F this morning, high 55F.

  11. If we are trying to grow flowers and vegetables from seeds and do not have Grow lights, how can we ensure proper lighting in a cold country like Canada?

  12. Love the screwdriver method for removing them from the starter trays. Drives me nuts getting them out sometimes

  13. Living in west Texas, I just put my seeds into biodegradable planter pots and they're coming along good! April 1st, they go into the ground!

  14. Last year when I had the clear tops on most of my seedlings got moldy… any tips? Was my first time gardening so not sure if the mold is bad, I threw them out. (In Colorado for reference)

  15. 10:27 , hello! I love ur gardening techniques. I did tomatoe plant and cucumber seedlings but the leaves are growing in very thin and ph levels are 7-8.0 . They aren’t growing and it’s been a week. Could you please help me and give me some tips to get them growing again?
