Cutting Tree Roots Without Killing Tree. The Gardening Tips for your Garden. @HowAGardenWorks

As with any form of destruction, when you cut the roots of a tree it will weaken it. The effect is most prominent with smaller trees since they don’t need to expend energy on putting down new roots. For this reason, one should avoid cutting tree roots in their yard.

There are several common methods that can be used to kill or stunt tree growth, but which tend to cause more damage than necessary: *Root trimming/handling – Roots can be damaged by excessive digging and handling. Always try to leave the outer edge intact whenever possible (this is where new root shoots emerge). Large impacts like construction or invasive weed control can severely damage or even kill an entire root system; however, not all invasives are unwanted. Some invasive plants, such as bamboo or gorse, can make an excellent living fence when planted in their own specific containment area. In some cases the roots of a desired tree may be cut in order to prevent seed spread and make sure it is propagated from a local source. *Preparation for transplanting – This includes pruning branches that are too big for the rootball or cutting back trees that have been earthed up to compensate for root loss. It can take years before a tree suffers from this process if done properly but will inevitably lead to major stress and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases.
