I remember getting 5 inches of rain in less than 6 hours. It looked and felt like a solid wall of water. Talk about flooding! There were 2 small road bridges on my way home from college. The creek they spanned (a tributary of the Delaware River) had risen so high that it was rushing over the bridges. There was much worse flooding on the river and elsewhere. I used to be a junior life guard and loved to swim. But I've always had a very healthy respect for, and fear of, natural bodies of water. I think of them as living things; wild, dangerous, and often unpredictable.
Hail is the very reason I learned to start my own seeds. Here in the Midwest – we get sizeable hail spring – summer. One year, we had goose-egg+ size hail that lasted over an hour – right at the end of May. Stripped all vegetation (trees, bushes, flowers) down to bare nubs – we looked like a war zone. Of course, totally decimated my veggie garden. By the end of May in my area – you almost can't find transplants/seedlings anywhere. Nurseries, big box stores only stock for so long. So – the garden that year was pretty spare. Enter seed starting. Never again will I be without choices. And it's why I support you folks who teach. 🙂

I lost some of the tops off my sweet peas because of the wind. I was so sad because they had so many flowers on them. Lots of things growing already though so that’s fun to watch. Central Valley CALIF
Your garden looks beautiful
Hi Kim. I'm in central Alabama, zone 7B, braving the winter dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. It is still winter, but the temperature today reached 78F. My snow pes are popping out of the soil. I had sown seeds for Giant Radish of Sicily, French Breakfast Radish, Giant German Radish, Malaga Radish, Detroit Dark Red and Golden Beetroot. The cover is on my greenhouse, and the raised beds inside it are ready to plant. Tomorrow's goal is planting Seascape Strawberry plants in a GreenStalk tower, sowing seeds for Komatsuna, Boc Choy, Danvers, Purple top and Tokinashi Turnips. After that I have to get raised bed number 7 ready for transplants, transplant tomato plants into the greenhouse raised beds, and plant potatoes. I have a lot of planting to do over the next six weeks.
We got 3 inches of rain here in San Diego to your 5 inches. I had worms escaping my smart pots to our dry patio. I found them yesterday morning when I was out assessing how my garden was doing. I gently helped them into a dust pan and gave them a home in my newest garden bed. Another inch of rain expected tomorrow but then we are predicted to have cold but sunny days for 7 days. Glad you and your property got through this unusual weather. – Rhonda
Wow! That's a lot of rain! So surprised that instead of being beaten down, your garden mostly seems to have jumped, like it's saying to the storm, "yeah, what else you got?!" I notice you said you're getting another storm right on the heels of this one. Could that storm have already hit you, and be responsible for the images I've seen on the news here for SNOW in L.A.?! You guys must feel like you've entered the Twilight Zone. I do too, for the opposite reason. Here in NJ, we're eerily lacking snow. Don't get me wrong, my back hates shoveling. But this weather just isn't normal, doesn't feel natural.
I'm fascinated by your broccoli – I've never seen it grow so tall! Looking forward to watching your fennel and pomegranates grow! Poor tomatoes. I don't have Instagram, so I hope you guys show us a few trail cam critter-catching pictures here on YT.

We got snow in San Bernardino county. First time I saw a blizzard.
We live at a higher elevation in Southern California and I have started my seeds indoors but it’s still too cold😢.
You are always so positive! When you were looking at the bent-over vegetables, you kept making comments like, “you don’t have to cut it off — you can just stake it back up.” And “You can leave it there for the birds to enjoy!”
So much of life is how we look at things and react for the long-haul. And a garden is not an overnight thing, it’s always for the long-haul. So you’re teaching a lot of life out there walking around your garden. ❤

Thankful the damage was minimal. Squirrels will eat tomatoes at night. They have done that at night to my tomatoes in the past. Bird netting is what I have used. Good luck!
Man, I can't grow spinach to save my life. They just won't grow. 😂
You are probably on the case but also grab the semi ripe tomatoes to avoid splitting. As the the ripe one's, the wild life have gone to town. Mulching around the tomatoes, etc, or even a cardboard collar helps with splash back and helps to prevent blight.
Trying to persuade hubby for another slim line water butt but yes might need a mains drip line soon. The plants thrive more on rain water.
Rain water is soon becoming the colostrum for plants.
When it next rains in the SE, UK, i am getting every vessel to collect it all!
What did Mac think about the storm ? I bet he didn’t stay outside did he ?
Just looked through my garden diary on my laptop and found out that I had hung dried cayenne pepper with a string next to or close to the tomato to deter squirrels. Also, I make a crushed cayenne powder and sprinkle around my plants. I grow a lot of cayenne pepper to use as a pest, etc. deteriant.
I’m going to start gardening off lettuce and greens tomorrow. They really need to be planted. I will plant them under a cold frame I made.
We are LOVING these cold temps and rainy days here in Riverside County! We have ~30 fruit trees and we are really excited to see how these temps and water effects this coming fruiting season!
