Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. If you'd opened with your peaceful process of making tea or coffee again & then moved onto your peaceful potting, we'd all be in nirvana! ❤️🌱🤗☺️ (hint..hint…plans for your next video! 😉🤔💕)

  2. When you said blue butterfly pea in the other video I at first heard 'pee'. And I thought what!
But some of these naturalistic concoctions might ??? But how would you gather butterfly pee? Follow them around with a spoon? And specifically blue ones? Then I figured it out. LOL. Thought I'd share and maybe you'll get a chuckle out of it.

  3. Ilove your greenhouse and your videos of course. thank you so much for your knowledge! To get the parker off your reusable cups or plastic tags just use a little alcohol on a rag and it will wipe right off to reuse <3 Thanks to you I made sure to load up on Bootstrap farmer cups and trays.
I am so mad I planted my peppers today but now I am definitly thinking I planted them too deep ugh

  4. Attempted to start a paperless system a while back (recordkeeping). I have an Evernote account, with Garden Notebook. Snap a photo of Seed Pack Front / Back, assign a Number to each seed pack. While in the garden, I can grab my phone, look up number to see all seed pack info. I have a Grid in excel where the "Squares" in my garden show which Seed numbers are in each section.

  5. So jealous you can start seeds! I'm in north Iowa in zone 5b. We still have months to go =/ Thank you for allowing me to live vicariously through your seed starting lol

  6. Living in Illinois and my garden season is much shorter than yours but I have already started my pepper and egg plant seedlings. I have found that if I don’t start them very early I have to wait till the very end of season to get the first one and that’s just not cool, I started them in the middle of January so I will be in peppers and eggplant much earlier in the season this year. I can’t wait to start tomatoes. The greenhouse looks beautiful by the way.

  7. Hey Jess I just wanted to let you know how happy I am that I discovered you years ago. When you first started this channel. And I've been a devoted follower ever since. I've gotten a lot of educational info , uplifting inspiration and entertainment . Always look forward to your new videos a bright spot in my day. I sincerely want to thank you for doing what you do best being you.

  8. I am trying out putting scotch tape over the writing on the seed labels.. Maybe you can try it too, to keep the writing safer from fading

  9. I love watching you garden! You give me such great ideas on things I should put in my garden! Thanks for the video!

  10. I use good masking tape and good permanent marker on each pot and I can reuse again next year .

  11. I'm definitely having spring fever but I live too far north to start any plants yet. Thanks for sharing your early spring!

  12. Saw those pale pants and wondered if you were brave or just cleaner than me when you play with soil. Good to know you get messy too! Love the lights and the fade in and out setting you had them on!

  13. IT’S NOT BORING CONTENT. PLEASE GO OVER HOW MANY SEEDS TO SOW, THINNING, etc. we need this to jump start our seed starting 🙏🙏🙏

  14. Jess, have you ever grown snail vine from BK? I grew it last year, and it was the most beautiful fragrance. It loves humidity, so I wasn't sure it would grow here in zone 5 IL. It would probably do even better for you. It was so lovely. Blessings

  15. For those plastic tags, i always take them up and do a quick swipe of rubbing alcohol to remove the name. Obviously for you that starts 100's of seeds it would be more difficult. i can use for 4 years at least doing front, back, front, back. Just a tip for smaller growers.

  16. Never boring. Your thought are usually thoughts I've had, and its nice to have validation or other ideas when I'm out of them. It's quiet time for me to watch. Thanks.

  17. Do you use seed starting soil or potting soil? If potting why? Do you add boiling water to get rid of bug eggs?

  18. Labeling yes. I stick the Sharpie/blind-made stick in the ground at the base of the plant, BUT upside down so the name is in the ground. If I don’t remember, I pull the label up, and poof. There you go. Then, you get Ben to pull all the labels before the chickens come in.

  19. Your greenhouse lights make me think of the twinkle lights in my sewing room. I always say I have twinkle lights because, "this is where the magic happens!" I'm pretty sure there's magic happening in your greenhouse as well. 😊

  20. Jess none of you videos contain useless content- every single one has taught someone something. May I ask why do you label every single pot ? why not just one label per tray ?? or are the trays a mix of plants?. Jess you look fabulous & your hair is perfect- Great cut & style for you. Cheers Denise- Australia

  21. I will try not to blow everyone's mind here but I actually make punched labels out of can lid circles, but I punch numbers on them and use them outside. Each season I assign the varieties a number and write it down in my garden journal. You can use a number per plant but that gets crazy if you have a large garden but you could if you like to put things here and there. You just punch a hole into them and then you can hook them(paper clips, twist tie, etc) onto the plants or what ever is holding them up. You could just start with a Sharpie to get going and slowly build up your inventory of lids. Punching them resolves the issue of info disappearing. Size doesn't matter. You could color code them too if you wanted. I have a can opener that un-glues the lid instead of cutting it so they are safe. Many cans will give you two "lids" . There are a variety of tools that can be used as a punch but I would ask the owner of the tools 😉 before you use them. What do you think? I would love to hear everyone's ideas and variations on my system. I think there's always room for improvement. 😊

  22. I have to put more thought into garden markers, what I did last year didn't go well! :p

  23. It's always a joy for me watching you in whatever your doing. Only one month more for me to wait till I can plant my peppers! You are so inspiring for me Jess. One other thing , you probably didn't read my last comment, but my urinary tract infection is gone , hasn't even been a hole week from starting the Oregano Oil. I'll keep taking it for a while yet just to make sure it doesn't come back . GOD BLESS YOU……..GAIL

  24. Hi Jess. Long time viewer, beginner gardener, HUGE fan, 1st time commentor. I have a question. What are your thoughts on boiling bagged potting mix before seed starting? Is it really necessary for fungus gnats, etc?

  25. Hi Jess, I looked up germination rate on the Butterfly Pea and it says that it could take up to 30 days. So be patient for those of us who want to start some of these this year. Blessings & Peace to all!

  26. I don’t have a green house but am trying to start my plants in a cold frame this year you keep me motivated love your videos God Bless you and your family

  27. This video gave me a different perspective on your table top. It's more beautiful than I remember it being. The lighting was perfect!

  28. I started my shishito peppers about a month ago and just started some herbs! All of these plants are staying inside so timing isn’t critical and it is so nice to have a little gardening to do even though I have at least 2 more months of true winter where I live:)

  29. You're right, it is boring. So boring in fact that I watched all of it after digging up two plots of grass this evening and adding some compost that I'll need to rework into the soil at a later date.

oping this year to just add a mix into those spots where I plant so that it doesn't need too much next year.

I did just tarp another area to try to kill the grass without having to turn over the soil just to try it out.

I'm officially addicted to all things gardening….

  30. Definitely holds me over! We are moving to our very first homestead at the end of March, and there is zero infrastructure for gardening in place. We are going to be starting from scratch!

  31. I will never understand just why it's SOOO exciting to see those sprouts starting to push through! I planted lettuce a few days ago, and I swear it was like 6 hours and I was checking 😆 I can not contain myself when it's time to start seeds and get into some dirt!

  32. What is real fun with the butterfly tea is to make an iced tea and freez some lemon juice. Then u ad one or two lemon juice ice cubes with your normal cubes and its like magic. Poor the blue tea into the cup and it turns pink!
