Roots and Refuge Farm: A Day of Potential (and beautiful eggs) | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I love having chickens! Live in town now so not possible! I so enjoyed you and teaching about chickens and the eggs! Just appreciate all your programs! ♥️🥹

  2. I have a Kebonnixs 12 egg incubator that looks just like that one and I am working on my third round of eggs & It works great..If you keep your temp & Humidity right it’s gonna work great!!

  3. I love having so many different colored eggs ❤️ I will be hatching my own chicks this year. I'll have a breeding flock of one American bresse rooster with mostly bresse hens, but also blue laced red wyandottes and buff brahmas. Their offspring will be our meat bird flock. In my multicolor laying flock, any hens that go broody will be allowed to sit on a clutch of multi-colored eggs. Many of my hens are getting older, so those will be my replacements to keep the multi-color egg genetics.

  4. I think those darker eggs are so be beautiful! And I can see paying more for those in store! Your chickens are so beautiful as well! I'm bias about chicks, ducks, & rabbits! My family raised those💕

  5. I always thought that the egg needed to be kept very warm for it to hatch after being laid by the hen.

  6. Why in the world would people be charging 100$ for eggs? Big Business does way too much of that to the masses why would ppl jump on board and do it to each other 🤦‍♀️ That makes me sad…

  7. Nice experiment…. it would be soooo cool to see baby chicks, especially on Ben's b-day !!!! Good luck and cheers.

  8. Jess, I can tell that you’re feeling soooo much better and that you’re literally on the garden runway ready to take off into the new garden season! Since you have all accomplished so much in this last year, I can truly see your dreams for the garden and homestead bursting at the seams this year! Oh yes my friend, your excitement is contagious! 🎉🎉 May our loving and faithful Lord, continue to heal you physically, and bring all that you and Miah have dreamed of to fruition, so he’ll be glorified through you both! Love and blessings to you all. ❤️🙏🌷 Denise in California.

  9. I got that same incubator last year. No complaints but I really had to stay on top of the water for humidity. Loved how it turned the eggs for me. Great hatch rate.

  10. I had a friend sell me 10 brown eggs ftom his Chicks 🐣and really didn't notice different taste than one white from store 🤔

  11. I have that incubator and I absolutely love it. I have tried a few different ones and for the price point it works very well for a small homestead! Also pointy end of the egg faces toward the center!
Watch the humidity on the incubator. There are 2 holding areas for water one is for days 1-19, the other “B” (should have come with a red cap) is for the last 3 days when humidity is supposed to be higher.

  12. Love ALL of this video. Gathering eggs, fun plants to grow for tea, geeking out on genetics! But I think my favorite moment is you and Miah just working in the milk room. Not talking, just working side by side. My favorite “dates” with my husband are farm days while the kids are at school♥️ glad y’all got to enjoy some one on one time away from the camera and craziness too!

  13. This incubator has JUMPED in price – $180's now. I've seen a few people using it now. So exciting! Looking forward to your success. ❤️

  14. Not 30 minutes before I watched this I told my wife that the chickens had really picked up production and we should fire up the incubator soon.

  15. 🥚I've been waiting for the day you wanted to produce your colorful eggs again 🤗 so cool, and bonus Ben's baby chips 🐣 I can't wait to see how it works out 🕊🕊

  16. I really enjoyed this style of video! Showing how Teamwork Makes the Dreamwork!! Just a relaxed day of your homesteading duties. ❤

  17. I’ve never had much interest in podcasts so I hadn’t tuned into yours. While I was painting a room last week, I decided to give it a listen (after u mentioned it in a video playing in the background). I listened to all of them, then again on a ling drive this weekend. Looking forward to more episodes being released. Equally looking forward to the Exchange opening this year. Excited to see how it will help the surrounding homesteaders as well as those in your local community. Praying you will be the ‘Missouri Star Quilts’ for Batesburg/Leesville so another tiny town can be revived.

  18. Beautiful eggs! We lost all our Maran hens this year, but our Maran rooster is busy making some olive egger babies 🤩 First set in incubator started 2 days ago. Which type of Maran do you have? We really want to get blues and splashes, but our current is a black copper maran.Maran.

Edit: or I could have just waited another 12 seconds for you to answer the question in video 😂
