β€œIf you grow the food you eat, it tastes better. Seasonal vegetables are grown at the right time, and you can make sure everything matures on the plant or on the tree. It’s as fresh as you can get.” -Marc Gasol

Welcome! Today is my Week 5 Master Gardeners training recap and today we are all about VEGGIES! Today’s class was an overview of vegetable gardening since the topic is SO huge but I still had PAGES of notes to share with all of you! πŸ… Enjoy!

  1. Thank you so much for sharing such great information. I just planted my veggie garden this weekend so this was very helpful as this is my first veggie garden. I truly appreciate all that you share as I am a fairly new gardener all around and I have learned so much. I'm in Florida but the same zone so I was super excited when I found you last spring. Thanks again enjoy your day. 🌞 πŸ…πŸŒΆπŸ«‘πŸ₯•πŸ₯¦πŸ₯¬

  2. You certainly expanded my horizons this morning 😊 I paused this video about 12 x ha. Thanks for sharing your classes with us. I knew a few families but certainly not all! It is important to know this too. I need to add more veggies to my front yard. Last year I redid my vegetable garden out back into a formal look and added a lot of flowers. No trouble with pollination!! Thanks again and will check that Edible Landscaping book out as this is the way I am going.

  3. Last year I grew cabbage in 2 of my flower garden areas and they were beautiful. I just recently heard of growing tomatoes with Sunflowers. The leaves shade the tomatoes from harsh heat but you need to remove the leaves from the lower stalk of the sunflower because they are toxic to tomatoes. I also grew coleus with my garlic. By the time I harvested my garlic, the coleus was taking off. Hope this helps someone get ideas on how they can integrate veggies into their flower garden.

  4. Did they say anything about companion planting to help with pest control? The Next level garden channel has some very useful advise about what to plant near a specific plant to maybe control aphids, or plant basil next to tomatoes to deter tomato hornworms. I’ve tried the tomato basil suggestion and it works. β„οΈπŸ’šπŸ™ƒ

  5. If anyone is interested in growing vegetable tips the Next Level Garden is a good channel to watch. Companion planting, tips and tricks for successful vegetable gardens ect. β„οΈπŸ’šπŸ™ƒ

  6. I haven't seen any purslane on our farm in Arcata, CA but when I lived in Wisconsin it was everywhere and we ate it. My buddy then was the doctor who invented heart bypass surgery, Dr. Dudley Johnson, and he was big into Omega 3 eating vs Omega 6. Purslane was way up on the Omega 3 with spinach and olive oil. Perfect crunchy salad addition.

  7. My husband is out in California visiting his friends and I looked it up and he is only 2 hours from you! Wish I would have gone, we could have met up and gone plant shopping! πŸ˜‚

  8. Enjoyed this video Janey! Might just try mixing in a few veggies, like kale or lettuce where I was thinking about Hosta. I'm like you, more interested in ornamentals, I like the beautiful and pretty.

  9. Very interesting. I love cool season vege gardens, especially broccoli! Unfortunately mine didn't do well this year 😞. You're learning so much, grasshopper. 😊

  10. Great veggie video! I always look forward to hearing what’s being taught in your classes. I’m now interested in getting my MG accreditation! I’ve heard many times that planting different families of veggies in a garden bed is the best method in growing veggies.

  11. Thank you Jayne for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! Funny how the whole veggie garden thing just ain't your thang! Haha You must be getting SO EXCITED with your tour coming up! πŸ§‘β€οΈπŸ’œπŸ’™πŸ’š Liz from California

  12. Borage…NO!!! It’s a brut in the landscape & takes over soooo fast! Maybe a pot would contain it, but I am constantly ripping up little borage plants that become huge quickly. Planted a 4” pot & regret it!

  13. One thing you need to keep in mind with Borage is that it can over take the area that you plant it in. Even if you keep it pruned. An idea would be that you plant it in a pot that fits in your design of your garden that way it doesn't interfere with other plants or shrubs. Thank you for all the info and for taking us on your journey. Have a wonderful day.

  14. One thing I forgot to mention is that every year you will need to rotate the vegetables as well rotating the annuals that you plant. These will improve your soil and will only take what nutrients they need. I usually try to rotate my annuals and have seen much improvement in their blooming and growing.

  15. I got overwhelmed last summer with the veggie garden ..my first time ever gardening. We had an β€œestablished” garden area at the home we moved into. We already had tomatoes growing, I planted beans and onions and peppers. I fought with a gopher, who stole my green onions from underneath. I also met mealy bugs.. then came the ants, sun scorched veggies and strawberries lol omg it was a rough first experience lolπŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚ thank you for sharing your tips and knowledge Janey!

  16. Janey this was great information. I started researching edible landscaping because I have a small space to grow vegetables. I’ve learned through a few resources vegetables grow better this way. Also when you are planning your cool season flowers, do the same for your cool season veggies. Mine made it through the arctic blast just fine with adequate cover. The vegetable I didn’t realize I’d enjoy was broccoli greens. Much better than kale in my opinion. Also check your local plant nursery for varieties that they have as transplants. Gives you an idea of what grows best in your zone. Happy gardening everyone.

  17. Your an example of "school can be fun" I can tell you like learning about gardening. If only school is as interesting ..lol

  18. Would be interesting to hear how they recommend dealing with insect and also deer/rabbit pressure. I have a lot of rabbit pressure and they eat even roses and lavender down to the ground

  19. Ok … vegetables aside … watering in containers (veg or flowers) … will β€œdeep watering” work in large containers and raised beds? Like, my raised bed is literally raised off the ground, and is only about 20” deep. Obvi the roots aren’t going to be 8’ long … so still β€œdeep water” 2x a week or is container gardening a whole different set of rules?

  20. I’m only ever planting two β€œcherry” tomato plants (sungold and super sweet 100), but I’m happy to learn every day….never know when the info might come in handy. 😊

  21. The water tips are really good! I would also water fairly frequently with a timer and my results were not as stellar as they could be(especially for veggies), and in previous years my mom used to just water manually setting timers and would sometimes forget to turn the water off for a long time (we still used way less water than an average household) but the accidents must have provided that deep watering they needed because her plants especially tomatoes seemed to do much much better
