Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Sound like chicken rice-cook rice with broth.we eat here with simple sauce 🌶️ and celery cilantro sauce

  2. Jess can you show how to can the broth please. I love to do it. Thank you for all your effort to help us. "I hear you" I will tryto do better because the price of food is up in the sky. 2 years ago I could do a weekly shopping around $100 now more than double and money running out. So I need to eat and coock smarter. 🫂

  3. Thank Jess! Your greenhouse is an inspiration- mine is so very small compared to yours but we are only two. I’m itching to use it for the first time 🌺

  4. Lord 5 boys…..Jesus bless you…I have 3 and there is not enough food on this earth for them. Thank God they are grown and feeding themselves (all live another state)…LOL

  5. It's good to see Miah looking like he is feeling better! Also – I had let lemon balm and chocolate mint grow wild and it wiped out all other domestic herbs and berry plants over a few years – sage, romemary, strawberries all succumbed to the wild mint family… Alas, we have torn them out and completely revamped, with the intention of giving them each their own SMALLER space to flourish. About giving the chicken carcasses (after making broth) to the pigs – do you not worry about the bones causing issues as they would (potentailly) with dogs? I am only asking because I have no experience with raising pigs. I do think it is wonderful that you and your family are big into a low-to-zero food waste lifestyle and aim to help others who may not know how easy it is to stretch that single food item into several meals.

  6. I could just hear myself in a year. “ what in the world were you thinking, planting this mint” where’s my weed killer🤪. Not actually weed killer, but I would be kicking myself for planting it.

  7. Really appreciate you sharing the whole process of not only what you cooked but plans for the leftovers and the reasoning behind it. It gave suggestions of what people could combine that would be available and seasonal. The more ideas the better to eliminate the sense of “now what should I do with the abundance I have?” Really helpful. Thanks!

  8. I've put off seed starting for several weeks now. I should have started my tomatoes 7 weeks ago in SWFL. With hurricane clean up, the flu and just life, I've put it off. I need motivation but everything has just been "alot" lately

  9. Can I make a recommendation? Use a 4 cup measuring cup for the broth. It will literally save half your time

  10. Jess, your snake plant is very dry! It’s crying out for halp! (The moisture meter) 😅

  11. Do you fix a Thanksgiving turkey in that roaster. I don't have one. Thanks for showing what you all are doing

  12. Wow Jess, I try but still cannot use everything as you do. I love that you tell me what I can do with everything so I try my best. That’s a good thing and worthy of attention. There are so many things I just used to throw out! Beef broth for a soup base is a minor example.
