Roots and Refuge Farm: A Little Like Spring | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. Hopefully here in North California we will not freeze or get close to it again. We had one week of cold last week.

  2. Hello! My ears perked up when you said gluten free sourdough!! Do you have a recipe you could share? Do you follow a regular sourdough recipe, but with a special gluten free flour? Which flour do you like for this? And a recipe for bread, using the gluten free sourdough would be wonderful, too! Thank you for sharing! Have a wonderful day! You are blessed, too!

  3. We need a video of baking bread for real true, never baked bread, ever dummies! lol Plus if it includes sour dough starter which I now have but have no idea what to do with.

  4. I used to enjoy this YouTube channel. Unfortunately, recent content has become more "pray and bless" this and that. I appreciate my life and experiences. I have a strong non-religious moral code. I do not attribute life to any super being or power. I believe it is everyone's right to believe what they choose. Injecting religion into a gardening and farming blog is the producer's choice. As it is my choice to find other YouTube channels. This last video was edited to add a religious parting comment. I find this contrary to decent religious conduct. Unless being catty is part of being a good Christian. I doubt it.

  5. Also you can purchase and train Lulu to wear a sweater coat to keep her warm and cleaner when spending other than a quick visit to the grass outdoors.

  6. I have one of those mats for my seeds, they work very well. I see there are other uses too it seems. Bread has always been my nemesis… thanks. Waxing lyrical is something we all do Jess, most of it comes to nothing 😉

  7. We moved to Idaho a couple years ago and our home is near a lake reserve. I agree with you that the sound of wild geese “chatting” as they fly over is SUCH a lovely sound (along with the squeaky wing sounds of the ducks wings) . I’m becoming a real lover of the quail that have chosen to live and have their babies across the street at our neighbors too!

  8. I totally understand the emotion of hearing the geese. The first thing I heard on our new property were the spring peepers. They bring me joy every year reminding me how happy we were to finally find our place. 🙂

  9. I need an egg skelter! I never knew this was a thing, I’ve been just putting them on the counter for years! Ty so much for sharing all that you do!

  10. Here in MI I wait for the frogs to freeze under 3 times before Spring is here. We’re a ways off. Loved your video.

  11. I wonder if you ever loose a broody hen to starvation? I had a backyard hen go broody. I took the eggs every day, but she still obsessed over hatching eggs and staying in the nesting boxes, never going outside the coop. She barely ate or drank for 40 days. I tried hand feeding her favorite foods. No luck. I really worried about her dying.

I finally went to the feed store, bought a few young chicks, and snuck them underneath the hen in the middle of the night. She accepted them as hers, turned into a proud momma, started eating and drinking again, and regained her health.

Since that experience, if I see a hen turning broody I put her in a separate cage with no nesting box or dark corners, keeping her exposed to more light until her mood changes. It usually only takes a few days. I do this on the advice of The Chicken Chick blog and her "broody breaker" method.

I'd ordinarily let the hen raise a few chicks, but I can't have roosters where I live, so there are no fertilized eggs.

Do you ever have to treat your broody hens in a special fashion?

  12. It's still the frozen tundra where I live with Temps close to zero F and wind chill well below that. I am patiently awaiting my seed start dates but that's still months away. Growing basil rooted from my garden last year and sprouting greens is all I can do. My winter fortitude is waxing thin. I try to live vicariously through your videos.

  13. Will you share your recipe for gluten free sourdough starter? And which flour you used?? Having some yeast overgrowth and probably need to perfect some gluten free sourdough.

  14. My husband and I started watching Poldark two weeks ago. Now we are almost finished because…it's unbelievably addictive. All I keep thinking is that my plan was to name my future buck Thorin (even before I knew you had one by that name) and now I'm wishing I'd been able to pounce on your goats before you sold them.

  15. It's been a lot like spring here too, but not quite. I'm at the point where I don't sell my food. I keep it in a root cellar- something I highly recommend you build if you don't have one. People will tell you that southerners don't need root cellars, but I live in a subtropical climate and I LOVE mine. It's fantastic storage.

  16. I’m praying for Miah, to get well quickly. Y’alls farm is so lovely at dusk. Thank you Jess for sharing. ❤

  17. Question Will you be telling us about the eggs that you are trying to keep longer soon. If I happen to come across eggs on sale I would like to get them. Thanks in advance.
