Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. G'day Everyone, this video is a little longer video than usual… If you don't mind these longer types of videos be sure to smash avo that like button! Cheers ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. What a great husband and father you are! You even put the garden trinkets back! More men should take on the stay at home role, they bring different skills to the job.

  3. Loved it.

Had a question, when the bed sinks will you just top dress to raise it up with the plants in it? I planted a permanent capsicum bed, and know it'll sink but thought if I top dress constantly the plants would adapt.

  4. ill buy a hat if you make one that fits. That hat dont fit you and it wont fit me.

  5. Me: so jealous of Australian sunshine and summers

    Also me: sees spider

Me: I'd like to retract my former statement

  6. Good job Mark. Can't wait to see how your herbs will grow. Maybe a drip feed would be a good idea to water them from that tank. Good on ya mate from Philippines.

  7. How do you 18:08 how do you keep your corianders from bolting? I love the plant but I donโ€™t get to enjoy it for long.

  8. I do the same as you, filling the bottom of raised beds with branches and garden waste. I realised this year I accidentally made hot beds, with the garden material creating heat as ot breaks down. I realised because I still have tomatoes growing here in Japan as we haven't quite hit freezing temperatures yet. I'm hoping they ripen before the icy weather hits.

  9. I live in New York State, USA, we only have a six month growing season. I have a loveage plant growing for 10-15 years now. It has a root at ground level that at least six inches across. Just thought you might like to know that up front. Love all your programs but wondered on the kitchen renovation??? Finished???

  10. I would have stacked them back two high and infront of the two high one high.
That would have provided your porch with alot of shade to sit out in I really like these garden beds they give that farm/country life feeling .

  11. The herb beds are going to be so handy right on the back porch Mark. They look great as well. Ive still got to fill my Birdies beds which I will be doing shortly ready for spring. Great video

  12. We just adore you and your videos. Thanks for your service too! God bless you and your family always! ๐Ÿ˜Š

  13. Most high earners have a life that is about a bit more than just salaries…. Leaving all family and friends behind just to grow your money through profitable investment is knowledge โ™ป๏ธ

  14. You mentioned your time in the Army. When I served here in the states we used to train with the Australia Army quite often. Just wanted to inquire as it would be truly crazy if our paths had crossed. Take care.

  15. Great job ๐Ÿ‘ mate, always good videos ๐Ÿ“น ๐Ÿ‘, keep up the good work you do. From Albany Creek Queensland

  16. Mark, The spider part cracked me up when you told it to Bugger Off ๐Ÿ˜‚ I too prefer snakes over spiders. Love the new herb beds!

  17. You hate spiders huh here's a little tip that will ease your mind you are never more than 10 feet from a spider in your life time also apparently we swallow a few in our sleep every year lolz

  18. Oh, I love spiders ! Especially my lovely St Andrews Cross spideys up the back, with their beautiful web that they decorate!

  19. Good day Mark
I just have to say, I have been watching your videos since 2020 and your tips struck such a cord with me, my partner even started calling me his little garden bug because I started spending so much time in the garden. We stay in South Africa in Cape Town and my first harvest of baby carrots and potatoes was a wonderful feeling thus I kept watching you and I find your querkiness is amazing in the videos.
    Just love it.โค๏ธ๐Ÿ‘Œ
We recently moved into an apartment and I thought I had lost my green fingers, going from planting in a garden to planting in pots and obviously I was saddened by this… However I am proud to say we now have a green balcony with different herbs and veggies growing and this is due to watching your videos about growing in smaller spaces, it helped me a ton.

Thank you for your efforts in the videos, keep it up, I watch at least 1 of your videos a day. Love the info you share. ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ’–

  20. This was helpful, as I am creating an herb deck right outside my back door as well this spring. I am placing my compost scraps in the standing bed and pots this winter to help build the soil . Thank you

  21. I look forward to seeing more long videos about how this herb garden progresses, how you and your family like the new herb varieties you're trying, and any changes you might decide to make as different things grow or don't thrive.

This is great timing as I want to figure out something for outside my kitchen door into the backyard to grow herbs.

Thank you for another great video as always. I'll be looking for the gardening shirt and hat๐Ÿ˜Š
    Cheers!

  22. I love that shirt. I noticed that you didn't have Taragon, I love it. I have to keep replacing it because the slugs here love it. You have to buy a plant because it does not produce seed. I've got mine in a cold frame here in the UK, I think I'd better give it a chance and bring it inside now that the weather will be improving..

  23. Iโ€™ll love your gardens. My boyfriend is making me some tall beds for my back porch. Great idea to put herbs in them. Thanks

  24. my mantra is WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER. What a WONDERFUL Kitchen garden! LOVE IT!

  25. First 15 seconds of the video: ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ
